Position Summary: The Cancer Support Helpline® Navigator will lead a dynamic team of individuals who provide psychosocial support and education to patients and caregivers touched by cancer. This individual will also have a key role in growing and delivering CSC’s personalized services for people impacted by a cancer diagnosis at high risk for distress and in need of comprehensive navigation for their cancer care. Navigator will also respond to patient and caregiver inquiries, conduct a needs assessment, including distress screening and offer navigation to aligned CSC services and programs, provide financial and insurance navigation, oncology treatment, care and clinical trial navigation and decision support counseling and to local, regional and national resources as appropriate. She/he will provide ongoing follow up assistance throughout the patient or caregiver’s experience. The Navigator will report to the Helpline Director and will manage a team of Helpline Counselors. This is a New York City, Philadelphia, PA or Denver, CO based position.

Job Functions:

·      Manage Helpline professional mental health counselors and interns, maintain Helpline staff schedule and database systems updates

·      Support Helpline Director in Helpline referral partnership business development, implementation, metrics analysis and reporting

·      Provide telephonic intake and assessment for individuals seeking assistance

·      Complete basic assessment and distress screening, implement services, monitor and evaluate progress of patients/caregivers

·      Assist patients/caregivers impacted by a cancer diagnosis with emotional, social or practical needs throughout their care.

·      Provide short-term supportive counseling

·      Proactively reach out to potential referral resources (such as financial or housing resources) to understand the in-the-moment availability of services, application process, eligibility criteria and then assist the patient or caregiver through the application process and offer follow up

·      Assist patients and caregivers with referral and navigation questions within their current provider system, etc.

·      Schedule ongoing follow up calls to re-assess needs and provide ongoing services

·      Provide referrals to local, regional and national resources; including housing, lodging, transportation, oncology treatment centers, clinical trial education and navigation, etc.

·      Provide specialized information in pediatric oncology and genetics/genomics

·      Navigator will offer financial and insurance navigation and education including:

  • Facilitate referrals to organizations or companies that will help with cancer-related treatment expenses
  • Provide tips on communication with health care providers around the cost of care and payment
  • Help patients who are underinsured or have no insurance find assistive resources
  • Maintain and add up-to-date financial assistance resources in CSH database

·      Triage to CSC specialty counselors in pediatric oncology and genetics/genomics appropriate

·      Perform data entry into a computerized record keeping system

Required skills:

·      Staff supervision of health care professional team

·      Ability to interact well with patients/caregivers telephonically, via email and Web chat

·      Strong knowledge of managing financial issues and cancer including, but not limited to, insurance and billing, navigating hospital and medical practice financial services, accessing hospital, community and industry patient assistance programs

·      Strong knowledge in clinical trials, genetics/genomics and pediatric oncology

·      Strong communication and organizational skills

·      Excellent interpersonal skills

·      Ability to work under pressure in a calm and reassuring manner

·      Demonstrate the ability to work independently

·      Understanding of computer and systems for managing case records

·      Valid US driver’s license

Education Required: 

One of the following-

·      Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW), or the mental health therapist degree equivalent in training with patient navigation experience. Licensed Clinical Social Worker (or equivalent) in the state in which applicant resides. Financial social work certification preferred.

·      Oncology Nurse, ONCC preferred, with patient navigator experience. Bachelors in nursing required with a masters preferred. AONN certification a plus.

Experience Required:

  • At least three years of hospital based, non-profit or social services based oncology patient navigation and staff supervision
