POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Volunteer and Community Programming Coordinator will recruit and manage volunteers, will be responsible for their placement, training, and engagement with the YMCA of Montclair. In addition, the Volunteer and Community Programming Coordinator will spearhead the Y’s community programming, organizing events, coordinating volunteers and liaising with community partners. The Volunteer and Community Programming Coordinator at the YMCA of Montclair intentionally fosters a cause-centered culture focused on social responsibility and community engagement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Works with others to determine current needs for volunteers and to develop strategies for volunteer recruitment and placement (not including board volunteers).
  2. Recruits diverse volunteer pools across multiple dimensions of diversity. Screens potential volunteers and forwards copies of applications to appropriate supervisors. 
  3. Working within the Human Resources department to facilitate background checks, on-boarding, policy and review, and handbook acknowledgment. Responsible for communicating federal and state compliance.
  4. On-boards and develops staff and volunteers for success. Ensures volunteers receive applicable training and support from appropriate staff/sources. 
  5. Makes presentations to outside groups regarding the benefits of volunteering at the YMCA.
  6. Maintains volunteer files, tracks and reports volunteer hours, and generates volunteer reports on a monthly basis.
  7. Develops and coordinates community events including but not limited to: MLK, Jr. Day of Service, Black History Month events, Read Across America, Women’s History Month Events, Memorial Day, Welcome Week, Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving. 
  8. Manages Community drive initiatives such as holiday gift drives, operation backpack, feminine product drives, food drives, etc. 
  9. Serves as a community liaison with other non-profits and volunteerism groups in our community.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One to two years of related experience (e.g., as a coordinator of people or activities).
  • Ability to use typical business software and office equipment.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Understanding of the role of volunteerism within the YMCA.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but relevant experience will be considered

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 

HOURLY PAY RATE:

$20.00 - $23.00
