OVERVIEW

As the Bright Star School Organization continues to grow in the number of overall students, and enrollment at each school site, it is increasingly important that each of its students and their families has a designated advocate on campus. This role will be that of a School Counselor, someone who provides support and assists in the communication between each student, their teachers, administrators, parents, coaches, and prospective supplemental/enrichment programs. The Counselor will be part of all students and family facing functions for the Bright Star Schools Campus and will ensure the success of their assigned students while they’re at Bright Star. While we are engaged in Distance/Hybrid Learning, certain elements of this job description might be delivered a little differently, but the main objective of providing support and advocacy for students and families remains our top priority.

The Counseling Program will focus on two core areas, Student Services and Family Services:

     ● Student Services

       ○ Relationship building and mentoring

       ○ Academic counseling and support

       ○ Social and emotional support

       ○ College and Career Counseling (middle and high schools)

       ○ Community resources and referrals

       ○ Participation in Student Activities

    ● Family Services

       ○ Check-in with families throughout the year

○ Provide family resources and referrals

○ Parent education and engagement


JOB DUTIES (may include, but not limited to the following):

Academic Counseling & Direct Academic Support

  ● Course selection and scheduling (middle and high schools)

  ● Teacher/Classroom check-in and push-in academic and behavioral support

  ● Ensure students meet Bright Star Schools Graduation and Promotion requirements with quarterly academic check-ins

  ● SSPT and 504 plan coordination/facilitation

  ● Lesson planning for Monday SEL curriculum as well as future partnerships with teachers to provide relevant counseling curriculum


Student Mentorship & Counseling

  ● Provide a trauma informed approach to behavioral guidance and support

  ● Appropriately identify students social and emotional needs

  ● Practice trauma-informed social and emotional counseling/support

  ● Provide resources and referrals as necessary


Parent Liaison

  ● Ensure parents understand the promotion and graduation requirements at Bright Star Schools

  ● Offer resources and support for family challenges

  ● Conduct home visits as needed to ensure home-school partnerships

  ● Participate and facilitate parent workshops (College Knowledge Academy, Parenting Partners)

  ● Hold two 30 minute office hour sessions for students and two 1 hour time slots for parent appointments


Other Duties may include (based on experience and skill set)

  ● Coordinate parent group activities

  ● Develop parent education curriculum

  ● Coordinate student activities

● Develop and maintain relationships with colleges/universities

● Research and share summer programs, internships, and scholarship opportunities

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  ● Pupil Personnel Services Credential required

  ● College Degree required

  ● Deep understanding of child and adolescent development is imperative

  ● Strong oral and written communication skills including advocacy skills

  ● Fluency is Korean and/or Spanish highly desired

  ● Ability to connect and build relationships with students and families (Spanish/Korean required for some of our families)

  ● Ability to facilitate connections with students and faculty

  ● Ability to work with tracking systems (organizational skills required)

  ● Experience working with at-risk youth

  ● Proactive, self-starting, and motivating approach essential

  ● Familiarity with DeansList, Parent Square, and/or Illuminate a plus


COMPENSATION & OTHER DETAILS

  ● Salary based on experience

  ● Temporary position (Tentatively effective September 2021 - April 2022)
