Litigation Paralegal

Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta is seeking a full-time Litigation Paralegal to assist with federal litigation in the areas of immigrant justice and voting rights. The Litigation Paralegal would support ongoing litigation and assist with the investigation and preparation of future litigation related to immigration detention and deportation, language access, and voter suppression. They would have administrative responsibilities but would also engage in substantive legal work, including working directly with clients. The Litigation Paralegal would also support community education and outreach and policy advocacy efforts to protect and empower Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Paassicific Islanders (AANHPI) communities and other communities of color. They would work within the Litigation Department and be supervised by the Litigation Staff Attorney and Litigation Director.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice–Atlanta’s mission is to protect and promote the civil rights of AANHPI and AMEMSA (Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian) communities in Georgia and the Southeast through policy advocacy, legal services, civic engagement and organizing, and impact litigation. Our vision is a social movement where individuals are fully empowered, active in civic life, and working together to promote equity and fair treatment for all.

Responsibilities and Duties

● Assist with all phases of the litigation process, including any pre-litigation investigation. This will include intakes with potential clients (often detained in immigration custody), client communication and support, fact investigation, case management, and other litigation support, including with pleadings, discovery, hearings, and trials.

● Perform administrative litigation duties, such as filing court documents and note-taking, and general office duties, such as answering phones, handling mail, and organizing case files.

● Assist with certain non-litigation advocacy and ancillary client services as needed; for example, preparing applications for work permits and supporting voting rights advocacy with local boards of elections.

● Assist with public communications related to ongoing litigation and other advocacy, including community advisories, press releases, press conferences, and media inquiries.

● Assist with community organizing and education activities, including local and state policy advocacy. May include assistance preparing community education materials, trainings, and other public presentations.

● Work closely and collaboratively with other staff at Advancing Justice-Atlanta, staff from partner organizations, and staff from other offices in the Advancing Justice affiliation.

● Contribute to grant reports, as needed.

Requirements and Qualifications

Local to the Atlanta area, with access to reliable transportation. This position will largely be remote for the time being due to the COVID-19 pandemic but will likely require limited travel to and from the Advancing Justice-Atlanta office in Norcross, Georgia for certain tasks. Precautions are in place to ensure safe access to the office.

○ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or equivalent

○ Excellent oral and written communication skills

○ Excellent organizational and time management skills

○ Strong computer and other clerical skills

○ A sincere desire to advocate for the rights of immigrants, refugees, and people of color and a commitment to Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta’s mission

○ Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with a diverse client population and community members

○ Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment

○ Ability to work independently and proactively in a small team

Preferred qualifications:

○ Prior experience working in a legal environment or with litigation

○ Prior experience working with/ties to poor communities of color and/or immigrant or refugee communities

○ Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish or any Asian language


Salary/Benefits

Salary for this position is commensurate with experience and based on principles of internal equity with a generous benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance.
