Position Summary:

The Communications Manager is a central member of our team, working across all departments, serving as our primary digital storyteller and community engager. You’ll share JSA’s stories and messages with a variety of stakeholder groups (students, teachers, parents, alums, donors) via email, social media, video, texts, brochures, and other mediums.

A successful candidate for the Communications Manager role must be a quick study, able to absorb and adopt JSA’s unique “voice” for a variety of audiences, settings, and purposes. S/he will have a keen eye for design, and a demonstrated ability to design and produce visually appealing materials. S/he will be facile in a variety of communications channels and technologies, and able to quickly craft readable, shareable, and error-free messages rich in images. A hallmark of this work will be compelling content, as demonstrated by audience response and metrics.

Key Responsibilities:  

The Communications Manager will support JSA’s outreach and community engagement to constituents, including students, educators, alumni, and donors. 

MESSAGING & CAMPAIGNS

  • Serve as JSA’s primary storyteller, bringing our programs and impact to life for a multitude of stakeholder groups
  • Create and maintain an organization-wide communications calendar
  • Work across departments to institute unified and coherent messaging, stemming from JSA’s Theory of Change
  • Collaborate with the Development Department on year-round fundraising campaigns, with an emphasis on messaging and marketing collateral 
  • Collaborate with the Program Department on messaging to students, parents, and educators in alignment with strategic objectives 

WEBSITE

  • Manage JSA’s website, including design, functionality, and updates 

DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT

  • Engage a range of stakeholders online and achieve monthly social engagement targets
  • Compile statistics on social media engagement for monthly review 
  • Monitor and manage social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram 
  • Take the lead in digital engagement during targeted fundraising campaigns 
  • Manage JSA’s email blasts to donors, alumni, students, parents, and educators 

MARKETING MATERIALS

  • Update and review marketing materials such as brochures, one-pagers, flyers and other collateral material, as needed
  • Compose press releases on JSA topics and events 
  • Create one-page overviews of all JSA programs
  • Assist with producing JSA’s annual report.
  • Take and collect compelling high-quality photographs that tell JSA’s story through images 

EVENTS 

  • Work across departments to ensure that all JSA events (from student conventions, to fundraisers) are well branded and have the, “JSA look and feel”
  • Assist the Program Department in implementing JSA’s prestigious Speakers Program, with an emphasis on outreach.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • At least two years experience working in Communications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • A true passion for democracy
  • A belief that youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but that they can be leaders today
  • The ability to tell compelling stories and create content that engages JSA’s diverse array of stakeholders, including students, alumni, and funders 
  • Experience with creation, management, and sharing of social media, email, video, etc. Bonus points for having implemented digital campaigns 
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver quality content on schedule
  • Knowledge of Communications best practices
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills 
  • Creative, flexible, and innovative team player
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards
  • Excellent written, image, and verbal Communications skills. 
  • Familiarity with email marketing and marketing automation tools and platforms such as Pardot, Mailchimp, etc…

Working Conditions and Travel

We work with 12,000 of the most interesting and promising high school students in the nation; 140,000 interesting and engaged alums; and 20 dedicated and welcoming team members.

We have two recently renovated offices: on the waterfront in Oakland’s Jack London Square, and in Washington DC’s vibrant Dupont Circle. Both are easily accessible by public transportation. The offices are well lit, heated and air-conditioned with adequate ventilation. Requires working occasional weekends and weeknights.
