The Colorado Access to Justice Commission is an independent entity formed in 2003 with the support of the Colorado Supreme Court, the Colorado Bar Association and Colorado Legal Services. The Commission is comprised of twenty regular members appointed by the Colorado Supreme Court, the Colorado Bar Association, Colorado Legal Services, COLTAF, the Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado, the Governor, Speaker of the House and President of the Senate; the Commission also includes several ex officio and emeritus members.

The mission of the Commission is to develop, coordinate, and implement policy initiatives to expand access to and enhance the quality of justice in civil legal matters for persons who encounter barriers in gaining access to Colorado’s civil justice system.

Position Responsibilities: 

The Executive Director is responsible for:

1.     Providing staff support to the Commission and its various committees and ensuring the strategic plans and projects of the Commission are accomplished.

2.     Planning Commission meetings, including sending notices of meetings to Commission members, preparing meeting Agendas, compiling and providing requested information and presentations, and recording meeting minutes.

3.     Identifying grant opportunities and writing grant proposals.

4.     Coordinating and assisting in planning presentations and meetings around Colorado with bar associations, law students, law firms, government agencies, lawyers and the general public interested in development of and participation in access to justice programs.

5.     Collaborating with and providing information to national organizations, including the American Bar Association.

6.     Developing and maintaining the official Commission website and social media.

7.     Acting as a point person for all inquiries to the Commission.

8.     Coordinating and managing Commission events.

Position Requirements: The ideal candidate will possess a Colorado law license with a minimum of five years of experience working with or supporting legal services to the poor; however, other relevant experience may be a substitute for this qualification. Experience in nonprofit, fiscal, and staff management strongly desired. Must have the ability to build productive professional relationships with allied professionals and partner organizations.  The successful candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking ability.

Instructions:

The position will begin as an independent contractor role; funding is currently secured, and fundraising for sustainability will be an integral component of the position. Salary range is $70,000 - $90,000, depending on qualifications and experience.  The ED will report to the Executive Committee of the ATJC.
