Bronx Legal Services seeks a full-time Master of Social Work (MSW) to assist crime victims and their families

The Opportunity:

Bronx Legal Services seeks a full-time Master of Social Work (MSW) to assist crime victims and their families. The social worker will work within the Bronx Crime Victims Assistance Program, funded by the New York State Office of Victim Services. They will provide holistic support services as part of an interdisciplinary team of attorneys, paralegals, and Masters level social workers. The Social Worker will join the Social Work Unit at Bronx Legal Services and collaborate closely with attorneys, paralegals, and other advocates from the immigration, housing, family, and public benefits units.

Responsibilities:

Provide information about Crime Victims' Assistance and aid clients in applying for benefits and compensation through the Office of Victims Services

  • Provide case management support to individuals and families who have experienced crime
  • Conduct psychosocial assessments to assist clients in accessing necessary services and supports, and for the purpose of determining litigation options
  • Provide counseling, safety planning, crisis intervention, psychoeducation, and trauma-informed care
  • Provide referrals and linkage to culturally appropriate services to address immediate client needs
  • Identify and establish relationships with community-based providers needed to assist our clients
  • Advocate on behalf of our clients to access public benefits, social services, and medical care, in addition to other systems impacting our clients
  • Develop and provide community education presentations and inter-disciplinary related trainings
  • Conduct home visits and in-field accompaniment of clients when necessary (Note: home visits and in-field accompaniment are not currently expected due to COVID19 but are expected to resume when it is safe to do so).

Qualifications:

  • LMSW or LCSW preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required
  • Strong self-direction skills and the ability to work independently required
  • Experience providing case management to vulnerable populations required
  • Fluency or proficiency in a language other than English that we commonly serve is a bonus, but not required
  • Knowledge of civil court systems is a bonus, but not required
  • Experience providing short term counseling, crisis intervention and safety planning
  • Experience assisting immigrant communities, low-income communities of color, and clients who are experiencing challenges related to trauma, poverty, disability, substance use, and other systemically marginalizing factors
  • Familiarity with New York City & State institutions and social service systems
  • Experience providing client-centered advocacy, in the areas of mental health, public benefits, housing, child welfare, and the civil and/or criminal court systems 
  • Demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to working with low-income communities and communities of color to advance equality

This is a collective bargaining position. The salary is competitive and commensurate with experience as per the union contract. Legal Services NYC offers excellent medical, pre-tax flexible benefits and retirement plans along with generous annual and sick leave. Clinical supervision and the ability to earn hours toward social work clinical credential provided.
