BASTA is more than a non-profit. We are about Revolution!
BASTA is the largest housing rights non-profit organization in Southern California that provides direct legal representation to low-income tenants. We have four full-service offices, 15 attorneys, and boast 8 published cases where BASTA attorneys changed the law. We have a high-volume caseload comprised of affirmative lawsuits where we sue landlords as well as eviction defense cases. We have some of the highest pay standards in this area of law and an incredible result-based bonus plan that rewards hard work, merit, and success.
We are seeking candidates at all levels. If you are bored with your insurance defense job, then definitely keep reading! Yes, your insurance defense job is boring, and let's not pretend otherwise. If you have been practicing law for a few year(s) and feel lost, keep reading.
BASTA is not your average non-profit. We are not about red tape, a$$-kissing to donors, or hippie pot luck dinners. We are about zealous advocacy, working hard to create a difference in people's lives, and absolutely changing the system. If you like the movies of Fight Club, A Few Good Men, and the Avengers, then BASTA is probably the right place for you. Here is a test of whether you should apply:
1. Feel like using your law license to take money from the rich and give it to the poor?
Yep, we are not shy about it, this is what we do.
2. Do you have the personality to take cases to jury trial like you see on television?
Really, you will be in trial almost immediately, and we want you to try cases like jurors
see on TV.
3. Do you think stopping homelessness is a worthwhile cause? We sure hope you do!
4. Do you want to sue landlords, fight evil, and get paid to make justice? This is the best job
in the world.
5. Do you speak Spanish? Most of our clients are monolingual, so you will need to make the
them feel comfortable and happy.
If you answered "yes" to all of the above, definitely come interview at BASTA! Join the Revolution!

How To Apply
BASTA is searching for full-time Staff Attorneys for our Homelessness Prevention Project, which focuses on eviction defense litigation and trial work. We have openings in both our Los Angeles and Lancaster offices. The project is at the forefront of the next civil rights battlefield – the basic human need for safe, decent, and affordable housing – and is designed to ensure that persons without sufficient financial means have the same right to the same zealous legal representation as those persons who an afford private counsel.
Staff Attorneys will provide legal counsel, advice, and representation in jury trials to low-income individuals facing eviction, as well as work with an eviction defense team including attorneys, community affairs coordinators, and paralegals. Each of our eviction defense teams handles an extensive caseload related to unlawful detainer (eviction) matters. BASTA requests a jury trial in every single case that we handle, and Staff Attorneys will join a rotation where they litigate an average of at least one jury trial per month. The Staff Attorneys’ broad-based responsibilities will include leading jury trials, general pre-trial litigation, case assessment, depositions, discovery, and general advocacy on behalf of our clients seeking to avoid eviction and homelessness. The Staff Attorneys may also be participating in other projects related to improving housing rights for low-income tenants.
BASTA helps tenants because we believe that the “revolution” begins in our homes. If you are ready to use your legal education to actually help people and have fun doing jury trials like you see on television, please apply. We want to meet you, and the community needs you!
Excellent communication and organizational skills. Cultural competency so as to work with people from diverse backgrounds and across boundaries of class, race, age, nationality, etc. Ability to build trust and rapport with low-income tenants. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and work independently. Ability to use good judgment, multitask, and meet deadlines. First rate negotiation skills. Strong Spanish language skills required (be ready to converse in Spanish during your interview).
Oh, yeah, and a personality. We need enthusiastic and outgoing people ready to work hard and win jury trials.
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. New attorneys are welcome to apply. We are able to hire attorneys at any experience level.
