ABOUT LSC:


Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 132 independent nonprofit legal aid organizations with more than 800 offices throughout the nation. LSC’s mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans.


BASIC FUNCTION:


The Staff Accountant is responsible for ensuring the proper application of US GAAP to general ledger-related activities, including managing accounts payable and accounts receivable, preparing general ledger (GL) account reconciliations, assisting with the monthly close, and providing other general accounting assistance to Office of Financial and Administrative Services. This position is under the supervision of the Director of Financial Services. This position is included in a collective bargaining unit represented by the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers, Local 135. The position is located in Washington, DC, but will be performed remotely until the pandemic subsides.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  1. Manages accounts payable from financial systems to disbursement of funds including and processing the weekly payment run wires, checks and ACH payments. Syncs vendors and accounts in Anybill. Brings invoice and payment files from Anybill to accounting system.
  2. Deposits and posts cash receipts. Works with the Office of Institutional Advancement to record donations according to their restrictions. Reviews general ledger coding for accuracy and consistency. 
  3. Reviews staff timesheets and expense reimbursements to ensure accuracy and that deadlines are met.
  4. Assists with month-end closing including month-end reconciliation of assigned balance sheet accounts, while providing detailed analyses and explanations of all transactions.
  5. Reconciles bank accounts and prepares related journal entries.
  6. Performs standard month-end and year-end close journal entries by maintaining records and files.
  7. Maintains the fixed asset system and associated depreciation schedules.
  8. Maintains grant payment schedules and monitors and distributes payments in accordance with grant agreements approved by the LSC President.
  9. Updates and maintains vendor databases including confirming payment instructions. Reviews and processes annual 1099 forms and completes internal 1099 analysis.
  10. Provides financial information to the Office of Legal Affairs for state charitable registrations.
  11. Provides back-up support to OFAS staff and general administrative functions.
  12. Assists in year-end external audits by gathering supporting documentation and preparing schedules.
  13. Responds to payment and billing inquiries from vendors, grantees, board members and staff.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.


COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:


General:

High degree of flexibility and great attention to detail; exhibits strong initiative to identify issues, propose effective and appropriate solutions, and resolve matters; unimpeachable integrity and personal ethics; ability to work well independently and as a member of a team; good oral and written communication skills; ability to work under pressure and adjust to changing priorities and tight deadlines; ability to manage multiple priorities; exercises good judgment; must have demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately; maintains a high level of productivity. 


Technical/Specialized:

A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field. A minimum of one year accounting experience for Staff Accountant I or a minimum of three years of accounting experience for Staff Accountant II. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with advanced skills in Excel; knowledge of computerized accounting systems is required, NetSuite a plus.

Salary Range: $58,253-$65,612


Staff Accountant II Salary: $69,403

Salary Range: $69,403-$78,170
