Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is one of the largest public defense providers in the United States. We defend more than 35,000 indigent clients per year in New York City in criminal, family, and immigration proceedings. Since 2013, BDS has served as assigned counsel under the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP), a first-in-the-nation program that provides legal representation for indigent New Yorkers in detained and non-detained deportation cases. Our interdisciplinary legal teams of attorneys, social workers, paralegals, and administrative staff work at the intersection of immigrant rights and the criminal legal system and reunite people with their families and communities.

Under the direct supervision of the Administrative Support Supervisor, the NYIFUP Paralegal works with attorneys and other staff to challenge the deportation of our noncitizen clients, secure their release from detention, and obtain immigration benefits for which they are eligible.

Responsibilities:

·      Prepare immigration applications, affidavits and other supporting documents under attorney supervision.

·      Conduct interviews with clients, relatives, and witnesses to gather information, including preparing draft declarations and letters of support under attorney supervision.

·      Conduct country conditions and other factual research.

·      Request records from external organizations worldwide, such as birth certificates, criminal histories, tax records, and medical records.

·      Compile, copy, and scan complex evidence submissions for bond, relief from removal, and immigration benefits.

·      Organize and maintain case files.

·      Conduct country conditions research.

·      Maintain information in our case management system.

·      Submit filings with New York City immigration courts and agencies.

·      Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

·      Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience required.

·      1+ year of prior paralegal or immigration casework experience required.

·      Fluency or high proficiency in Spanish required.

·      Demonstrated commitment to social justice, understanding of challenges facing low-income communities and communities of color, and interest in immigrant rights and criminal justice.

·      Familiarity and/or lived personal experience assisting individuals facing deportation.

·      Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to compose, edit, and proofread documents.

·      Highly organized and attentive to detail.

·      Creative, determined, and passionate about helping others.

·      Able to work collaboratively with others.

·      Ability to take responsibility for multiple tasks, prioritize appropriately, and ensure all tasks are completed on time, in an environment where assignments often require completion on short notice (due to the nature of the immigration legal system).

·      Proficient in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.
