About Student Advocacy

Student Advocacy (SA), a nonprofit serving Westchester and Putnam Counties, NY, represents a powerful voice for primarily low-income and immigrant families with children who struggle in school and are at-risk for failing and/or dropping out. Our team of highly trained Advocates provide legally based education advocacy to ensure that children with special needs, and those facing unique life challenges receive the resources and access to which they are legally entitled in school. Serving over 500 youth annually, Student Advocacy works closely with diverse stakeholders to ensure equity and access to education.

Position Summary

The Bilingual Advocate Associate provides administrative support to Spanish speaking students and families, who represent our largest growing client population. Advocates help families find appropriate school placements for a variety of learning needs, represent children in superintendent hearings, residency matters, registration, and transportation issues. Student Advocacy also provides bi-lingual community information sessions on special education to help families navigate the system. This position reports to the Legal Director.

Responsibilities

·      Assist with intake, registration, and appointments primarily for bilingual clients

·      Enter client data into LegalServer, the organization’s case management system

·      Manage recordkeeping for student cases from opening to closing, including record requests, document production and scanning documents into LegalServer

·      Support communications with bilingual clients via phone, letter, or email

·      Serve as interpreter for Advocates who are working with Spanish speaking clients

·      Translate documents from English to Spanish

·      Assist in preparation of materials for Spanish speaking clients attending information sessions

Qualifications

·      AA Degree and/or working toward degree required; BA preferred

·      Fluency in Spanish required

·      Commitment to ensuring all young people have access to a quality education

·      Strong organizational skills, and ability to work independently and as part of a team

·      Proficient in MS Office suite and willingness to learn new technologies.
