POSITION OPENING: SPANISH SPEAKING STAFF ATTORNEY

We are looking for a Spanish-speaking attorney to join our Immigrant Community Law Center (ICLC). The ICLC staff attorney will conduct legal intakes, perform immigration consultations, provide direct legal representation in affirmative and defensive immigration matters, actively engage in marketing and practice development, and perform community outreach to develop partnerships and expand clinic client base. The position seeks substantive legal advice and mentorship from the Supervising Attorney.

The Organization

African Services Committee (ASC) is a Harlem-based community service organization whose mission is to promote the self-sufficiency of the African and immigrant community by providing direct legal, health, housing, and social services. For 38 years ASC has provided legal assistance and referrals to the immigrant community, as well as health, housing, case management, and social services for individuals and families impacted by HIV. By integrating a variety of funding sources, including grant-funded performance and fee-based models, we are able to address the needs of the community and invest time and energy into particularly important cases.

Against the backdrop of funding sources that are too rigid or insufficient to serve the thousands of New Yorkers now living in daily fear, the ICLC’s innovative, low-fee model is uniquely positioned to provide competent, comprehensive legal assistance in this ever-changing climate.

ICLC Staff Attorney Core Responsibilities

·        Provide quality affordable immigration legal representation to individuals seeking assistance, with an emphasis on removal defense, asylum, SIJS, family-based applications, work authorizations, travel documents, and naturalization;

·        Document files with progress notes, copies of correspondence, copies of pleadings, exhibits and all other case-related documents and enter in LollyLaw, the legal database used by the program;

·        Conduct thorough research, factual investigation, and write persuasive legal memoranda that are well supported with relevant exhibits;

·        Prepare well for and zealously advocate at court appearances;

·        Participate in trainings and read relevant statutes, regulations, rules, case law, memoranda, and legal commentaries for the purposes of preparing cases well and staying current on developments in the area of immigration law;

·        Assist in the supervision of the ICLC DOJ accredited representative and legal interns, including supervision of consultations, submission of applications, and data entry into LollyLaw as needed;

·        Comply with staff timekeeping requirements as well as ICLC billing and collections procedures;

·        Actively contribute to marketing strategy development and implementation through community outreach to expand the ICLC’s client base;
