Position Summary


NILC is seeking a Director of Communications to lead the planning and execution of NILC’s communications operation, including media, narrative, and digital strategy — amplifying the stories of low-income immigrants and their families. The Director of Communications reports to the Chief Communications Officer, is a member of NILC’s senior leadership team and plays a key role in advancing the strategic priorities of the organization. The Director of Communications leads a team whose expertise includes issue advocacy, digital communications, media relations, and narrative change. An experienced and inspirational leader, the Director of Communications works collaboratively across departments to ensure that our communications are aligned with our strategic framework and helping to advance NILC’s and the NILC Immigrant Justice Fund’s missions and vision.  

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a broad vision for using communication strategies to advance NILC’s and the NILC Immigrant Justice Fund’s (our related c4 organization’s) missions; create plans to execute said vision and tools to measure progress.
  • Oversee execution of research, and evaluation of strategic communications plans and messaging campaigns to advance our strategic framework.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Communications Officer and other senior leaders to develop NILC’s voice and vision on new and emerging issues.
  • Provide inspirational leadership to a team of communications professionals, fostering a work environment that supports professional growth and accountability, ensuring the health and efficiency of the team.
  • Collaborate with members of the senior leadership team to shape the direction of the organization and ensure that priority issues and campaigns have a strong communications strategy.
  • Engage with the Development Director to ensure a cohesive approach toward external communications with supporters.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief Communications Officer. 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Graduate degree in journalism, media relations, communications, or similar discipline preferred. 

Experience

  • A minimum of ten years of professional communications experience, including issue advocacy, media relations, narrative strategy, and strategic communications planning.
  • Experience working collaboratively and building alliances with diverse stakeholders such as immigrant community leaders, advocates, and policymakers from national, state, and local organizations, philanthropy, media, and others.
  • Strong commitment to team-building and fostering a positive organizational culture.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including the ability to mentor, motivate, and promote professional growth among staff.
  • Experience with professional event planning. 

Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent writing and public-speaking skills, with the ability to make complex legal and advocacy issues accessible to all audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, exhibiting confidence and comfort communicating with people from a variety of backgrounds, at every level of an organization.
  • Sound judgment in decision-making.
  • Strong connection to and understanding of NILC’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Able to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines;
  • Possess a deep understanding of the intersectional issues related to immigrants’ rights.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Comfort with writing under tight deadlines.

Salary for the role is commensurate with experience, and will be between $128,000 and $161,000.
