We are seeking to hire a Senior Council Governance Consulting Manager, for the Council Governance Team and its Consultants to provide deep expertise and content knowledge in governance, work that is critical for our strategic council capacity building. The Manager plays a critical role in shaping the vision for and focus of the governance work with our Councils, guiding our multi-year plan to build the governance capacity of local boards, and supporting the Council Governance Consultants (CGC’s) in their mission critical work.
The Manager oversees the work of the CGC's who works independently and in collaboration with other functional areas in developing high level governance resources for councils while carrying their own portfolio. Consulting resources are focused on the development of key strategies for council board use in achieving/sustaining high performing boards. The Manager assures the Council Charter Renewal Process upholds the integrity needed for National Board approvals.
The Senior Manager is:
- A Subject Matter Expert – The Manager is the resident expert on effective governance practices relevant for Girl Scout councils within the Girl Scout network and across industry effective practices.
- A Consultant - Provides strategic guidance to boards in identifying critical governance issues and solutions. Using tools such as qualitative/readiness assessments and performance metrics the advisor will deliver strategic governance consultation to councils.
- A Community of Practice Owner - The Manager applies the strategy for cultivating a national community among board chairs, board development committee chairs and board members.
- Build and maintain a community of practice for governance cohorts (e.g. Board Chairs, Board Development Committees, Board Members).
- Curate and develop resources, frameworks and tools such as case studies, templates and board guides to support councils in developing and sustaining high performing boards.
- Identify, develop, collect and disseminate through targeted council learning and working sessions, opportunities for councils to share effective practices and industry strategies for enhancing board performance.
- Guide the strategic integration of board and board chairs into the convening and communications of the Movement.
- Collaborate with Customer Office partners to ensure that key governance indicators for the council health dashboard are developed and periodically reviewed against industry standards.
- Advise on the Annual Review and Charter Renewal process influencing council health indicators and recommendations on charter renewals
- Serve as the customer office lead subject matter expert on the Blue Book of Basic Documents and operates in an advisory capacity on circumstances warranting Blue Book of Basic Documents policy clarification and/or charter intervention. Drive effective interpretation of the Blue Book of Basic documents.
- Conduct, commission or acquire appropriate research to analyze trends and identify key governance issues. Disseminate information to both council and internal partners.
- Oversee the design of governance content for GSUSA courses, national meetings, workshops, onboarding, and all other council connect content to ensure consistent messaging.
- Provide superior customer service and support to councils by providing information in a timely manner, modeling teamwork, professionalism, and demonstrating a commitment to organizational diversity.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- 15+ years of work experience in non-profit or entrepreneurial organization with preference for experience in a Girl Scout council.
- Experience with federated system governance or distributed governance models preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage people, including shaping a vision and developing the plans to execute and coaching and developing team mates.
- Develops strong relationships based upon trust, respect, effective communication, and achievement of common goals.
- Influences and motivates others to take action by adapting personal leadership style, anticipating and persuading, and making a compelling case.

- Demonstrated expertise in functional area with relevant work experience.
- Experience developing resources and tools in area of expertise.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong project management skills.
- Willingness to travel up to 60%.
