Position

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Connecticut Council for Education Reform (CCER), the Director of Policy Research and Outreach assists in oversight of CCER’s programmatic efforts, including policy research, outreach to and engagement with schools/districts, and general communications and branding. In addition, the Director of Policy Research and Outreach collaborates with CCER’s administrative leads on operations-related projects, as needed. The Director of Policy Research and Outreach must be passionate about Pre-K-12 education and have an understanding of education policy and key issues in the field of public education. Specifically, the Director of Policy Research and Outreach:

 

Oversees policy research efforts by:

  • Managing the compilation and analysis of research/data and summarizing research/data trends in order to communicate to a wide range of audiences.
  • Assisting in the development of policy and practice briefs.
  • Leading efforts to update CCER’s policy-driven publications and other relevant reports.
  • Implementing the Executive Director’s annual strategy to advance CCER’s policy agenda.
  • Drafting the Executive Director’s responses to current events and the changing education policy landscape.


Oversees public awareness and communications efforts by:

  • Developing and implementing an annual strategy for public awareness of CCER’s mission and policy priorities.
  • Managing the maintenance and content production for CCER’s website and social media presence.
  • Drafting articles, op-eds, white papers, etc. in support of CCER’s mission.
  • Creating collateral materials, as needed, to represent CCER’s organizational purpose and mission.
  • Organizing opportunities for the Executive Director to meet with and present to the media, legislators, educators, state officials, funders, and other strategic partners.
  • Ensuring consistency in messaging about CCER’s mission, fundraising priorities, and programmatic efforts.


Advances operations and programmatic efforts by:

  • Strategizing with CCER staff about upcoming projects that advance priority needs of Connecticut-based school districts.
  • Helping to coordinate and plan CCER-led conferences, events, and convenings.
  • Helping to prepare the board packet for all meetings of the CCER Board of Directors, as well as overseeing meeting logistics.
  • Assisting the Executive Director in development of a strategy for ongoing engagement with the CCER Board of Directors.
  • Maintaining a database of CCER’s past, present, and prospective funders.
  • Ensuring regular communication with funders.
  • Identifying and prioritizing grant opportunities.
  • Writing grant documents, managing the application process, and drafting reports on successful grant applications, as appropriate.
  • Leading special projects and initiatives, as necessary, to ensure organizational success.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate has:

  • A passion for CCER’s mission.
  • A bachelor's degree (required); master’s degree or higher (preferred).
  • Professional teaching and/or leading experience within Pre-K-12 public education.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to build new relationships with stakeholders, the media, and funders.
  • Experience with policy research and analysis.
  • The ability to both work independently and collaborate with a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Comfort with and aptitude for learning new technology systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to “multi-task” and deliver high-quality work.
  • The persistence to do whatever it takes to get a job done.
  • Good sense of humor and adaptability.

  • Turn Around Schools - Improve the lowest-achieving schools through strong leadership, accountability, and high-quality learning experiences.


Capacity Building: Closing gaps in achievement requires strong, knowledgeable leaders and highly-effective teachers. We provide forums, resources, and professional development to help build capacity statewide.

  • Two annual conferences highlighting research-based practices for school improvement;
  • Research and tools to support school improvement (e.g. Literarcyscan.org and schooldatasystems.org); and
  • Leadership development opportunities (e.g. 2018-19 Literacy Leadership Institute).


Public Awareness: CCER has become a trusted source of information for reporters and legislators and has a widely read blog and e-blast with approximately 7,500 subscribers. We use our public platforms, including numerous op-ed pieces and media appearances to raise awareness about the need to improve public education, and to advance our capacity-building and advocacy initiatives.
