Description
Tompkins Conservation (TC) creates terrestrial and marine national parks in Chile and Argentina, reintroduces missing species, conserves biodiversity, restores degraded lands, encourages environmental activism, and fosters economic vitality as a result of conservation. TC was founded by Douglas Tompkins and is led by Kristine McDivitt Tompkins and encompasses US (primarily Bay Area-based) staff, plus field teams and staff in Chile and Argentina.
Based in the U.S., the Development Director will lead fundraising efforts for Tompkins Conservation, with regular domestic and international travel expected. Since the role requires coordination with our teams in Chile and Argentina, we are looking for someone proficient in Spanish with excellent skills within decentralized teams. This is an ideal position for an extroverted, dynamic, creative self-starter eager to enable international conservation. The role requires wearing multiple hats, learning quickly on the job, and a high level of professionalism and self-organization.
Specific responsibilities include:
Development leadership and management:
- Align and coordinate TC global fundraising, representing and speaking to the diverse programs and strategic priorities in Chile, Argentina and beyond
- Work with TC’s president, chief of staff, and country program leads to create a comprehensive campaign, and/or country-specific mini-campaigns
- Continue to build an organizational culture of philanthropy partnerships
Maintain and expand the donor base:
- Maintain TC’s existing donor base via regular meetings, phone calls, trips and other forms of engagement
- Look for opportunities to expand the donor base
Stewardship and tracking:
- Oversee grant tracking and reporting
- Ensure TC stewards its donors and manages relationships with bequests/planned-giving donors
Soliciting gifts:
- Solicit support for TC’s programs, including writing proposals
- Partner with and coach TC leadership to also solicit support
Development-related opportunities:
- Evaluate and hand off event opportunities for TC leadership
- Proactively create event-related opportunities to accomplish development objectives
Qualifications:
- 6+ years of successful development/fundraising experience, including 2+ years leading a development function, participating in management teams and liaising with boards
- Experience with the diverse components of comprehensive fundraising planning and implementation
- A proven track record of qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, closing, and stewarding individual and foundation donors in the six+ figure range
- Passion for and commitment to Tompkins Conservation’s mission
- Professional, engaging, and articulate written and verbal communication
- Ability to juggle multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
- Strong attention to detail
- Technologically proficient with Salesforce and other standard organizational programs (GSuite, Powerpoint, etc.)
- Written and oral proficiency in Spanish
- Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally up to 30-40%
