Background/Summary: For 18 years, Red Hook Initiative (RHI) has nurtured young people in Red Hook, Brooklyn, to be inspired, resilient and healthy, and to envision themselves as co-creators of their lives, community and society. Dozens of participants in RHI programs have returned to RHI as staff, and have jump-started careers in youth development from there. A key component of our approach to youth development and community building lies in the integration of socio-emotional support. Social work values and holistic practices are essential. 

The Clinical team and the interdisciplinary program serving the community of Red Hook. Currently, the clinical team with collaboration of administrative staff are building a healing justice focused social/emotional team. It is our vision to witness the community of Red Hook reach the maximum expression of their humanity. Red Hook is impacted by the pressures, stressors and violence of systematic oppression and trauma. We believe that it is everyone's inherent human right to be treated with respect and dignity. It is our intention to support young people towards their emotional health and healing by providing social emotional therapeutic services in a non-clinical community based setting. As such, the clinical counselor role plays a pivotal part in shaping counseling service delivery and embedding best practices in an innovative and impactful setting.We are looking for others who align with this vision with a variety of therapeutic skills and healing modalities to join us.

RHI believes in the advancement and professional development of their clinical staff and are dedicated to continuing education and expanding possibilities of practice.  All staff are trained in  Motivational Interviewing, Mental Health First Aid, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, Psychoeducation (Seeking Safety), and Unified Behavioral Health screening.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Engage youth in individual quality counseling/psychotherapy with an anti-oppressive lens.
  • Engage families in counseling as needed.
  • Conduct assessments and create goals as appropriate for participants.
  • Bridge counseling services to our unique collaboration with nearby Behavioral Health clinic for psychiatric care when needed.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide holistic support services.
  • Develop and facilitate psychoeducational and/or therapeutic groups designed to meet the needs of community members, participants and programs.
  • When needed, offer accompaniment or home visits.
  • Provide referrals, advocacy and care coordination on a range of issues impacting participants.
  • Maintain a caseload. 
  • Complete documentation & data entry routinely and accurately.
  • Assist in program development and planning for social emotional services at RHI.
  • Attend all staff meetings, team meetings, and case conferencing.
  • Provide social-emotional education for non-clinical staff.  
  • Represent RHI at local events, community gatherings, workshops, and training, as needed.
  • Special projects as requested

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: The desired disposition of the incoming clinician include:

  • Commitment to racial equity in values and has a strong passion to practice in these values.
  • Familiarity with culturally responsive practice, and development of/ engagement with an anti-oppressive clinical perspective.
  • Awareness of the impact of structural/social inequalities on wellbeing, emotional development and the mental health industry.
  • Reflective about the use of self in counseling and interpersonal dynamics.
  • Enthusiastic about community work and youth development!
  • Flexibility to engage young people therapeutically in a non-clinical/community-based setting.
  • Desire to be in a collaborative team setting.
  • Works well independently.
  • Ideal candidate should be detail oriented and have strong desire to learn and grow clinically

Minimum Experience and Qualifications: 

  • LCSW, LMSW, LCAT, LMHC or LMFT preferred. Limited Permit holders for MHC and MFT acceptable.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • SIFI certified is a plus
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish/Chinese) is a plus
  • At least one year of experience providing counseling services to people 11-24 year olds.
  • Red Hook residents or strong affiliation with the Red Hook community preferred.
