Primeros Pasos is a small, primary care health clinic located in the rural Palajunoj Valley just 15 minutes outside of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala by bus, serving as the only reliable source of healthcare in the entire valley as it is the only clinic equipped with doctors, dentists, a laboratory as well as a pharmacy. Primeros Pasos is a non-profit, independent organization with a comprehensive outlook on health care. With the collaboration of health professionals, health educators, volunteers, and community leaders, Primeros Pasos offers quality and affordable healthcare as well as health education to the rural, underserved communities of the Palajunoj Valley of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Primeros Pasos incorporates and combines clinical care, health education, and community outreach programs to effectively provide preventative and primary care.

The Volunteer Coordinator/Service-Learning Assistant supports Primeros Pasos' aim of improving its ability to meet specialized clinical needs without risking overreach by developing partnerships for delivering more specialized clinical care to the communities of Palajunoj Valley. The Volunteer Coordinator/Service-Learning Assistant will also ensure positive and productive service learning experiences while managing all elements of the program that addresses specific program needs


1. Service-Learning Volunteer Recruitment

  • Maintain and update database of organizational research/project needs to create and market niche volunteer/intern positions
  • Design, update, and circulate volunteer position descriptions based on organizational research/project needs
  • Conduct volunteer interview process, make candidate selection and assign individuals in appropriate positions based on skills, interests and organizational research/project needs
  • Assist in design of research study/project to ensure they fulfill organizational needs

2. Volunteer Orientation-Supervision-Exit Processes

  • Orientation
  • Lead general on-site orientation
  • Assign staff supervisors
  • Regularly update and distribute Service-Learning Introduction, Welcome and Fundraising Packets and other relevant materials
  • Supervision
  • Assist/facilitate in successfully carrying out research/project
  • Check in with both staff and volunteer/intern on a regular, pre-scheduled basis to monitor progress
  • Accompany programs in community, when necessary
  • Maintain volunteer activities/task calendar per Organizational Monthly Calendar
  • Support volunteers in adjusting to living in Xela and monitor their overall well-being to ensure a positive volunteer/intern experience (e.g. help coordinate homestays, make recommendations for Spanish language schools, serve as point of contact in case of emergency, etc.)
  • Exit
  • Ensure proper handover of research/project including reporting of results of research/project, communication with staff and suggestions for future directions, if applicable
  • Administer a Volunteer Exit Survey and request written blog for each departing volunteer
  • Post-volunteering experience engagement
  • Maintain communication with volunteers after their time at Primeros Pasos ends (fundraising, volunteer recruitment opportunities, etc)

3. Assist Development Director in Fundraising & Promotion

  • Secure all volunteer donations
  • Help lead planning, development and implementation of fundraising campaigns/events in Xela
  • Help maintain Primeros Pasos and IAHA websites and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn)
  • Help identify new promotional opportunities (i.e. through local, national and international media outlets, university service-learning boards)

4. Assist Administrative team to facilitate relationship with IAHA & Guatemalan Board of Directors

  • Help Primeros Pasos Administrative team to frequently report on operational progress and needs while effectively engaging Board members

5. Administrative Functions

  • Sign off on volunteer paperwork including documentation for university practicum requirements, research ethics approval, as required
  • Compilation of reports, as required


  • Lives in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala (Xela) - preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including public speaking in both English and Spanish
  • Social media management experience - preferred
  • Ability to identify organizational needs and develop realistic, responsible and sustainable solutions
  • Personable and able to develop a positive rapport with volunteers with a diverse set of experiences and backgrounds as well as with staff, supporters, partners and other stakeholders
  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills to ensure effective communication and collaboration between volunteers/interns, Primeros Pasos staff, Guatemalan Board, and IAHA
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills and background (e.g. logistics, coordination, planning)
  • Project management experience
  • Experience working in resource scarce environments
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, objectivity, and adaptability to unexpected situations
  • A commitment to and passion for Primeros Pasos’ mission


  • Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Development, Public/Global Health, Community Development, International Relations, Communications or related field with minimum two years of applicable work experience with non-profits
  • Fluent in English and advanced-level Spanish (reading, writing and speaking)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
