Position Summary: The Survivor Leadership Institute (SLI) Director brings their lived experience as a survivor of the commercial sex industry to play a critical role in the oversight and management of GEMS national program, the Survivor Leadership institute and Resource Center which supports survivors across the country with professional and personal development, training, networking and connections. SLI hosts the only national, survivor led annual conference for survivors, and the SLI Director will be responsible for overseeing the planning and implementation of the conference. The SLI Director will oversee staff working on multiple programs that fall under the auspices of the SLI including internal survivor leadership development, the Ambassadors program, professional development for survivors through in person training and webinars, the technical assistance program for survivor-led organizations and the research project. With multiple projects to oversee, requiring a range of skill sets, the SLI Director should have experience with project management, possess strong planning and people management skills and be highly organized. The SLI Director should also be flexible and creative, be enthusiastic about engaging with and learning from survivor participants and able to create programming to meet the evolving needs of the diverse group of hundreds of SLI participants. The Survivor Leadership Institute continues to grow and adapt to meet these needs and the SLI Director should be passionate about empowering survivors and open to new ideas that will best serve them. As an external facing role, the SLI Director should serve as a strong ambassador embodying the values and ethics of GEMS. The SLI Director will also be a member of the Senior Management Team and work collaboratively with other members of the team to monitor their department’s budget and daily operations. The SLI Director will also provide support for GEMS, its staff, its members and work as part of the larger organization to further GEMS vision and goals.


Lived experience of GEMS core issues, commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking is required for this role. Women of color are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Masters preferred
  • Eligible to work in US
  • Lived experience as a survivor of the commercial sex industry, commercial sexual exploitation and/or trafficking is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • At least 5 years of work with marginalized populations, preferably survivors of CSE, including increasing responsibilities
  • At least 2-4 years of experience supervising and managing staff and interns at a social service or social justice nonprofit agency
  • Strong understanding of commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking, the national anti-trafficking movement and critically an understanding of the issues impacting survivors
  • Knowledge, background and an investment in women’s right advocacy, cultural consciousness and competency
  • Clear understanding of and demonstrated experience with authentic survivor leadership 
  • Demonstrated experience both facilitating (leading) and co-facilitating group conversation with people of different communication styles
  • Ability to listen to diverse perspectives and ideas in an empathetic manner
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office, database experience preferred 
  • Some experience with community based presentations, media, and public relations preferred
  • Experience working with multiple staff, volunteers, and program responsibilities
  • Strong administrative and organization skills
  • Ability to work flexible hour including some evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple time –sensitive tasks
  • Sense of humor is required; patience, compassion and integrity are a must. 
  • Sincere interest in supporting other survivors
  • 2-4 Years in advocacy and education about mental health with the broader public
  • High level of comfort speaking with different community members and large groups
  • Demonstrated experience both facilitating (leading) and co-facilitating group conversation with people of different communication styles
  • Ability to listen to diverse perspectives and ideas in an empathetic manner
