Teaching Coaches for Project re:Fresh in Oakland, Ashland, and Hayward

This past year was super hard, and has disproportionately affected students impacted by the foster care system or housing insecurity. Project re:Fresh is a new program for the 21/22 school year in Alameda County that offers 8th-12th graders impacted by foster care or unstable housing a unique opportunity to refresh their understanding of what it means to be a friend, a student, a community member, and most importantly, a valued human being.

We seek a founding team of innovative coaches who can facilitate interdisciplinary academic growth and social-emotional learning using a critically-conscious and culturally-responsive lens to support students in their individual journeys. 

This  position is part-time, M-F 2:30pm-6:30pm, with additional hours on Wednesdays and occasional Saturdays (opt-in). The learning hubs are located Mondays and Thursdays in Oakland, Tuesdays and Fridays in Ashland, and Wednesdays in Hayward. Feel free to apply for site-specific opportunities.

 Responsibilities include:

  • Facilitate recreational, academic, and team-building activities for students
  • Intentionally build rapport and support for cohort of 10-12 students at each location
  • Advocate for students, families, and households
  • Build collaborative relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Maintain an orderly and safe environment
  • Work positively and collaboratively with a diverse team
  • Complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned by site director

An ideal candidate would possess the following competencies:

  • Highly motivated to work with and shape the lives of youth
  • Previous teaching or facilitation experience with youth impacted by the child welfare system and/or racially and socioeconomically diverse youth 
  • Growth mindset and the ability to “fail forward”
  • Creative and enthusiastic team player who can be counted on to provide a safe, supportive, inclusive learning environment for all students
  • multilingual proficiency
  • 12-18 units in Sociology, Psychology, Recreation, Social Theory, or Education. 

Additional Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma
  • Negative TB test results (<4 years)
  • Ability to pass Livescan Background check
  • Resume with professional references
  • A commitment to serve the entire school year (start date August 2021 - June 2022)
