WHO WE ARE

Since 1963, A Better Chance has been the only national organization of its kind, working to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.

Through our signature College Preparatory Schools Program (CPSP), highly-motivated students of color are recruited for placement in over 300 outstanding independent and public schools across the country. Students who are accepted to and enroll in our Member Schools become A Better Chance Scholars. Our comprehensive assessment program enables students to explore multiple school options in an effort to help match them with the right school.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Reporting to the National Director of Programs and serving as the supervisor of the Schools and Placements Team, the Program Director, Schools & Placements will work closely with the National Director of Programs to ensure the robust identification, recruitment, and placement of students across the United States at A Better Chance member schools. This position is full-time and based in the northeastern United States

Job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Admissions and Placement

Recruitment/Identification:

 Work with the National Director of Programs to develop and implement a national strategy for maintaining relationships with a national network of representatives from feeder schools, churches, civic, and community-based organizations that serve as pipelines for students and families 

 Oversee the design and execution of presentations (virtually and in person) that accurately and competently explain the educational opportunity available to A Better Chance students and families

 Oversee national recruitment activities that align with A Better Chance’s institutional brand, mission, and strategic plan

 Oversee the national administration of benchmark, SSAT, and ISEE testing for A Better Chance students 

 Oversee Schools and Placements Team staff as they work to ensure the completion and submission of A Better Chance applications 

 Lead the annual revision of the ABC application in coordination with the National Director of Programs 

 Lead the annual assessment of the ABC admissions process in coordination with the National Director of Programs 

 Develop processes for and oversee the national reading, evaluation, and scoring of student applications 

 Work with the National Director of Programs to develop a national strategy for enlisting new feeder schools/organizations and Member Schools in accordance with A Better Chance’s strategic plan

 Attend programming executed by the Preparation and Success Team when possible

Placement:

 Oversee the development and maintenance of relationships with A Better Chance member schools through periodic site visits, conference attendance, and virtual conferences/meetings

 Oversee the development and coordination of Interview Days, Member School Fairs, and Referral 101 workshops 

 Develop and oversee a national referrals and placement processes for students in the A Better Chance cohort

 Oversee Schools and Placements Team staff as they advocate for A Better Chance cohort students with school leaders and admissions officers at member schools

Management and Operations

 Manage the Schools and Placements Team consisting of you, two full-time assistant program managers, a schools manager

 Manage the Schools and Placements Team budget 

 Work with the National Director of Programs to create and enforce the Member School Agreement

 Work with the Preparation and Success Team to ensure programmatic alignment

 Work with the Database Manager and Application Coordinator to ensure admissions materials are complete and provided to Member Schools

 Sit weekly on the Programs Management Team (National Director of Programs; Program Director, Schools and Placement; and Community Affairs Associate)

 Oversee the creation, distribution, and analysis of surveys (parents and schools) to assess the efficacy of the A Better Chance placement model

 Develop, manage, and/or utilize organizational tools to manage data, assignments, priorities and tasks

 Analyze data to inform identification, referral, and placement goals

 Assist with special projects as needed within the organization

 Oversee the Schools and Placements Team as it works with the Community Affairs Associate to leverage parents for programming needs

 Attend and assist with key Development events

WHO WE ARE SEEKING

 An individual with experience working with students and families from under served backgrounds, preferably within an educational setting (K-12 or higher education)

 A person with experience in admissions secondary or post-secondary admissions

 An individual with a proven ability to prioritize, organize, and follow through on tasks and deliverables within a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment

 Someone with a keen understanding of the broad educational issues facing educational systems in the US and students of color in particular

 An individual with a valid driver’s license who is able to work some evenings and weekends and travel periodically throughout the United States

 Someone who is highly proficient in Microsoft Office products and web & cloud-based applications 

 A person with a proven ability to work with a wide range of people organizationally

 Prior experience working in an independent school setting is a significant plus

 Fluency in Spanish is a plus
