SEIU Local 49 is a 14,000-member local union based in Portland, Oregon. The Local represents and organizes janitors, security officers, and health care workers throughout Oregon and southwest Washington. We are committed to helping workers fight for social and economic justice on the job and in the community.

 Job Description:

Support Specialists on our team operate in a fast-paced environment often times fielding multiple competing and compelling priorities. This position includes welcoming members, vendors, and the public to our Union Hall, handling high volumes of data entry, and membership application processing. In addition, Support Specialists on our team handle a wide variety of other tasks to help support the work and program of the Union.

Other tasks may include: compose letters and reports not requiring extensive knowledge of technical program detail, including determining formats, modes of address, etc., for letters and reports; proofread and apply knowledge of grammar; distribute incoming mail, perform clerical functions like making copies, filing, production of mailers, fliers, and contracts, setup and support for meetings and actions, ordering supplies, event coordination and attending actions that may include; rallies, pickets, and political events.

Some specific duties shall include:

  • Screen and direct walk-ins and calls; provide general information; take clear, concise messages, and open and close the main office
  • Data Entry of membership applications, processing of applications with Employers, and filing membership applications
  • Data Entry including survey results, skills tracking, and
  • Provide clerical support for the organization including booking meeting rooms, production of materials, ordering food, ordering supplies, event and room set up and tear down, support for actions including strikes, rallies, marches and conferences, and gathering and putting away of supplies
  • Clerical functions: copies, production of mailers, fliers and contracts, and preparation of materials for bargaining and meetings
  • Maintaining office wide calendar
  • Other duties as necessary to win as part of a movement of working people, and as assigned 
  • Actively participate in other union activities, political organizing (that may include canvassing/walking neighborhoods) and solidarity actions

Qualifications:

  •  Passionate dedication to improving the quality of life of working people and enthusiasm to participate in a wide range of activities
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills, including the ability to successfully relate to people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures
  • Good communications skills, with excellent customer service/relationship skills and the ability to relate to limited-English speakers
  • Analytical skills to problem solve and innovate on current systems
  • Ability to solve problems creatively, exercise judgment and think on your feet
  • Must be able to perform successfully in both independent and team settings
  • Experience with VAN, ZenDesk Excel and Asana a plus
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus

Requirements:

  •  Able to demonstrate basic computer literacy, basic database use, and ability to learn basics of the services provided by the union and general knowledge of union representation
  • *In office work required on most days in line with CDC and State of Oregon Workplace Guidelines regarding COVID-19
