The Folger Shakespeare Library, located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, is seeking an experienced Box Office Manager to lead in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. This individual ensures a high level of customer service for patrons attending approximately 300 events per year, including performances by Folger Theatre and Folger Consort, as well as Poetry and literary events, lectures, film screenings, and more.
Pandemic Response: Non-essential Folger staff, including this role, are working remotely from the D.C. area, and all programming has been moved online. When we return to the offices, this position will be expected to work onsite.
The Box Office Manager supervises all box office operations, including: recruitment, training, and scheduling of staff (up to 1 full-time and 5-10 part-time employees); maintenance of ticket inventory and constituent data in Tessitura; management of annual subscription campaigns; and collaboration with partners in Programming, Marketing, IT, and Advancement to ensure events are promoted, ticketed, and executed smoothly.
Additionally, the Box Office Manager supervises all Box Office staff, and is responsible for coaching them to ensure procedures are followed, delivering regular feedback about job performance and conducting reviews to ensure the highest quality of service is provided. This is an excellent opportunity for enthusiastic candidates with at least 2 years of supervisory experience in a box office, and in-depth knowledge of ticketing and/or patron management systems.
Successful candidates will have the ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment, and be comfortable providing service to the public, solving problems, and being a source of information and calm in a busy office. Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team, in both supervisor and colleague roles.
Strong computer literacy with proficient database application skills are needed. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills required, as well as high attention to detail, an excellent sense of discretion, and the ability to maintain confidential patron records in a high-volume environment. Selected candidate may be required to obtain an ABRA Manager’s license.

The schedule for this position is routine during the performance season, with regular evening and weekend work required (3-4 evening/show shifts per week. Outside of performance season, schedule is flexible, with more routine hours of Monday-Friday, 10:00am-6:00pm, available.
