Achievement Prep is an award-winning college-preparatory public charter school network committed to historically underserved communities of Southeast Washington, DC. Our flagship middle school, which opened in 2008, serves approximately 500 scholars in 4th – 8th grade. Opening in 2013, our elementary school, serves approximately 350 scholars in K – 3rd grade. It also includes an early childhood partnership with AppleTree Institute, which serves approximately 160 preK3 and preK4 scholars. Our mission is to prepare students to excel as high-achieving scholars and leaders in high school, college and beyond.

What You Will Do

The Assistant Principal of Instruction (API) will be the primary driver of academic excellence and ensuring student achievement in the school. S/he will be a coach/supervisor of coaches, directly developing, supporting and driving the impact of the Deans of Teacher Effectiveness (DTEs) who directly support and develop teachers. Working very closely with the Principal and Assistant Principal of Culture, s/he will play an instrumental role in setting, monitoring, and achieving goals that result in positive outcomes for scholars.  

Reporting to the Principal and working with 4 – 5 instructional leaders, you will:

Instructional Leadership

  • Ensure that the core curricula are implemented with fidelity 

·      Own school-wide teaching and learning daily (school day: 8:00AM – 4:15PM M, T, Th, F & 8:00AM – 1:30PM Wed.)

  • Coordinate with Principal, Assistant Principal of Culture (APC), and DTEs  to support teachers developing competence in the curricula though modeling, observing, providing feedback and supporting instructional leader and teacher reflection and implementation 
  • Work hand-in-hand with the Assistant Principal of Culture (APC), and other instructional staff in establishing positive classroom climates, high scholar achievement and strong school culture

·      Set data-driven academic goals and outcomes for academic program, instructional leaders and teachers, and monitor progress and adjust as necessary towards to same

·      Establish, implement, and maintain school-wide instructional/teaching and learning rituals and routines

  • Track/monitor instructional leader and teacher responsiveness to feedback as evidenced by implementation of strategies, action plans and weekly goals 

Cultural Leadership

  • Provide leadership to all staff and scholars in establishing a positive, structured, and achievement-oriented school culture 
  • Ensure that teachers set extremely high expectations and manage their classes in accordance with the Achievement Prep Way
  • Coach leaders and teachers to continually improve their instructional practice, especially as it relates to issues of classroom management and school culture 
  • Be highly present and visible during school hours relentlessly ensuring a positive school environment 

·      Maintain a culture centered on our ethos and core values of Determination, Respect, Enthusiasm, Accountability, and Mastery

  • Collaborate with other members of the school’s leadership team to create and sustain programs for scholars and families that recognize and celebrate achievement and continuous growth 

Support and Intervention Leadership

·      Support the ongoing growth of instructional leaders by co-observing instruction, then supporting the instructional leaders to identify the highest-leverage action step and script an impactful feedback conversation

  • Coach others on how to collect and review scholar data, then identify and execute the most important “next steps”
  • Plan and deliver professional development sessions to teachers at Wednesday PD, during Data Days, during Summer Institute, etc.
  • Support instructional leaders and teachers in the implementation of ongoing assessment, data collection and data analysis to ensure mastery of standards across the content areas 
  • Support instructional leaders and teachers in developing and implementing targeted interventions 
  • Use coaching tools effectively (classroom observation tools, data sheets, scholar action plans, etc.) 
  • Help instructional leaders and teachers develop and implement classroom-based, developmentally appropriate interventions for individual children and groups of children to enhance their acquisition of social/emotional and cognitive skills  

·      Attend Individualized Education Plan (IEP)/Response to Intervention (RTI) meetings and support the needs of individual scholars

Member of Campus-Based Leadership Team

·      Exhibit an unwavering commitment to high academic achievement and character development in our scholars

  • Meet as needed with leadership team members and share in the duties of running the campus effectively and to plan, problem solve, and support one another on an ongoing basis 
  • Work as a key member of the leadership team, collaborating and reflecting daily to ensure a strong school
  • Conduct weekly conversations with the campus-based leadership team focused on scholar achievement data to ensure clear next steps and strategies to drive scholar outcomes
  • Participate in grade level meetings and ensure fidelity to grade level lead protocols 

Administrative Leadership

·      Oversee internal and external testing at various times during the year

·      Coordinate the process of creating and distributing all grade reports

·      Plan and coordinate bi-annual Parent Teacher Conferences

·      Ensure teachers are actively communicating with families regarding scholar progress

·      Manage staff attendance and substitutes daily

·      Create, finalize and maintain scholar rosters in the summer/fall

·      Work with Principal to oversee and ensure fidelity of daily and master schedule

·      Manage time, tasks, deadlines and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment; support and hold others accountable for the same

·      Attend and support events during the school day and in the evenings (monthly) that invite families into the building

·      Liaise with Network Office staff to carry out organizational goals as necessary

Be willing to take on additional responsibilities as necessary to fulfill Achievement Prep’s mission for our scholars 

You Must Have

·      Bachelor’s degree

·      3+ years of experience as a teacher of record & 2+ years of instructional leadership and management in an urban school setting

·      Proven track record of success with student outcomes, staff management, and professional development

·      Ability to regularly be one of the first to arrive and last to leave the building daily (staff hours: 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM)

·      A Master’s degree in education or educational leadership
