Description

The Regulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (RegLab) is a growing research lab at Stanford University dedicated to improving regulatory policy, law, and administrative governance via rigorous evidence-based evaluation and research. Projects span various substantive areas and include research on food policy, environmental enforcement, antidiscrimination, access to justice, veterans adjudication, and performance measurement.

Housed at Stanford Law School and part of Stanford University’s new “social problem solving accelerator” initiative, RegLab’s goals are to:

  • Conduct high-quality, high-impact research to cure the “evidence deficit” in much of law and regulation
  • Partner with government agencies and nonprofits around research collaborations
  • Promote the ability of the public sector to adapt, develop, and incorporate state-of-the-art data-driven techniques to learn from administrative data

We plan to build out RegLab to become the preeminent research hub on the use of evidence inside government. The Research Director will, with faculty support, lead or co-lead all research and management efforts in the lab.  In collaboration with the founder and faculty director, the ideal Research Director will:

  • Be a research and thinking partner to faculty and other research staff; develop projects, operationalize the work around them, and drive them to completion
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction, with RegLab’s faculty, to conceive and implement short- and long-term plans to carry out RegLab’s vision
  • Identify talent and recruit it to the lab
  • Manage research operations involving a team of full-time research staff, post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students, who are engaged in developing, advancing and applying science, engineering and technology in law and regulation
  • Work closely with partners within the university to grow the lab and complete its work: administrative staff at the law school, human resources, the general counsel’s office, the office of privacy, and others as needed
  • Bridge the gap between the lab and stakeholders outside the university:
  • Build, cultivate, and maintain collaborations with governments and nonprofits
  • Work closely with governments to define projects, gather data, manage collaborations, and deliver research
  • Identify potential sources of funding, develop and interact with potential donors and grant-makers to expand the lab’s work, and maintain relationships and report on progress
  • Engage media and policymakers by translating research into compelling stories through press releases and direct interaction
  • Oversee and manage the lab’s budget

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in law, economics, political science, public policy, statistics, engineering, or computer science and five years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience
  • Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans
  • Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources
  • Proven ability to work in academic and government settings
  • Strong background in data science, empirical social science, law, and/or public policy
  • Significant leadership and management experience, ability to oversee and direct staff
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills to translate research to a general audience and to engage research partners, policymakers, and potential research sponsors
