If you're a college junior and considering teaching, become an Ascend Summer Teaching Fellow. You'll join other exceptional aspiring educators for a challenging and rewarding eight-week summer program in New York City. In June, you'll take part in a fast-paced, intensive orientation, where you'll learn the basics of classroom management, lesson planning, and pedagogy to set you up for success with your students.

In July, you will teach each morning in our Ascend Summer School and, in the afternoon, receive detailed feedback and tailored professional development to strengthen your teaching craft.
In addition to teaching Ascend's engaging English language arts and math curricula, you'll engage your summer school students for one hour every day in a daily elective block, with activities of your own design in your choice of one of the following four areas:
- Climate change
- Social justice
- Social media and the internet
Not only will we provide you with an attractive summer stipend, we'll provide housing at no cost at a nearby college.
At summer's end, you may be offered a full-time, permanent position as a classroom teacher at one of our 12 schools in Central Brooklyn, beginning the summer after you graduate. Upon college graduation and your return to Ascend as a permanent staff member, you will have the option of earning either
- a Teaching Certificate from the Charter Schools Institute of the State University of New York SUNY for SUNY-authorized schools, by participating in Ascend's Teacher Preparation Program, or
- a Master of Arts in Teaching at the highly regarded Relay Graduate School of Education, an institution founded by leading educators from high-performing charter networks and Teach for America.

The Teaching Fellow will engage in various activities to build understandings and skills in teaching. In their first year, teaching fellows will be responsible for
- Actively participating in grade-level meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development, including an annual summer institute to build their teaching skill
- Working closely with and assisting a seasoned teacher to learn about pedagogical practices in the classroom
- Maintaining a passing grade-point average in their Relay Residency master program by completing all assignments and attending class regularly
In their second year, they will accept a full-time teaching position and will be responsible for
- Utilizing formal and informal assessment data to drive instruction and ensure student mastery of standards
- Building a warm and inclusive classroom environment, implementing the practices of Responsive Classroom
- Creating and maintain strong relationships with students and families
- Accepting ultimate responsibility for the academic progress of his or her students, and work to actively overcome setbacks
- Actively participating in grade-level meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development, including an annual summer institute
Staff and reporting relationships
The Teaching Fellow reports to the school director. He or she also accepts direction from, and works closely with, the mentor teacher, dean of instruction, and dean of students.
After submitting a resume, personal profile, and responses to short answer questions through our application portal, applicants participate in a multi-round interview process. Candidates must be college juniors, expected to graduate in December 2018 or Spring 2019. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate a:
- Passion and commitment to teaching scholars in underserved areas and to closing the achievement gap
- Relentless drive to set and achieve ambitious goals
- Strong collaboration and teamwork skills
- Growth mindset and ability to use feedback to improve practice
