United States of Care will help make it happen by working with Americans from across the country: patients and caregivers, advocates, physicians and other clinicians, policymakers, and business, civic, and religious leaders.

Position Description

United States of Care (US of Care) is seeking an experienced Director of Development who will serve on our Leadership Team to guide the organization’s development strategy and lead efforts to secure top-level financial support from foundations, high net worth individuals, and hospitals. The Director of Development will build and manage a development operation to strategically meet immediate and long-term fundraising needs. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will work with highly dedicated leaders across the organization including the organization’s Leadership Team, Board of Directors, and Founders Council to create and implement an integrated development strategy, sustaining current donor relationships and cultivating new opportunities to support US of Care. A strong candidate will have demonstrated experience in securing principal and major gifts in the five- and six-figure range from a variety of stakeholders; a strong fundraising background working with non-profits and foundations; an entrepreneurialspirit and enthusiasm to work in a fast-paced, start-up environment; and proven ability to meet year-over-year financial growth in support of the strategic direction of the organization. This position requires up to 20% travel and occasional work on weekends and evenings.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Design, implement, and oversee a development strategy to achieve significant revenue goals to support the strategic direction of US of Care that incorporates foundations, top-level individuals, and hospitals;
  • Develop and execute immediate and long-term plans for development that are both realistic and challenging to increase the number of multi-year gifts year over year;
  • Plan and implement US of Care’s fundraising strategies, which may include annual appeals, principal and major donor programs, grant proposals, events, and other fundraising efforts;
  • Manage and work closely with the Development Manager (and the program team as necessary) to write, create, and oversee the development of all grant requests and proposals;
  • Thoroughly understand and articulate US of Care’s mission, programs, policies, culture, values, key stakeholders, and financial strategy;
  • Develop a strategy to leverage US of Care’s Board of Directors and Founders Council in key fundraising activities;
  • Provide leadership, strategic direction, and management for US of Care’s growing development team (including the potential of working with outside consultants and vendors);
  • Solicit and steward high net worth individuals, foundations, and hospitals for multi-year support and investment;
  • Develop and grow an expansive pipeline of prospective funding targets;
  • Initiate stewardship, renewal, and communication strategies for existing donors;
  • Oversee the creation and editing of grant proposals, solicitation letters and individual donor proposals, coordinating among US of Care staff on content; 
  • Ensure that the organization has a highly functioning, robust system of processes is in place for maintaining fundraising collateral, record keeping, stewardship, and management of donor relations; 
  • Design and ensure strong development operations, including all data entry and management in a new CRM, as well as donor acknowledgments, gift processing, and income reconciliation;
  • Stay abreast of philanthropic, economic, social, and educational trends related to fundraising and healthcare issues;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • Minimum of 8+ years of senior development and management experience gained in a growth organization;
  • Passion for US of Care’s mission to ensure that every single American has access to quality, affordable health care regardless of health status, social need, or income;
  • Proven track record of securing large contributions of five- and six-figures from high net worth individuals and foundations;  
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and engage diverse audiences and to build long-term relationships, including experience leveraging executive-level staff and volunteers to achieve fundraising success;
  • Superior management skills, with a demonstrated ability to effectively hire and manage staff and/or consultants;
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills with the ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs;
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with US of Care’s senior leadership, Founders Council, donors, and staff; 
  • Superb writing skills and experience in creating and editing solicitation proposals, grants, and pitch decks;
  • A team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising and development initiatives;
  • Unimpeachable ethical standards, confidentiality, and personal integrity;  
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, G Suite, and experience with fundraising CRM’s required;
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

This position is full-time, and United States of Care offers competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience. Candidates may be located in Washington, DC or Minneapolis, MN.
