About HelpAge USA

HelpAge USA is the only US nonprofit organization that is exclusively focused on the wellbeing and inclusion of older people in low- and middle-income countries. Established in 2009 and based in Washington, DC, HelpAge USA builds awareness among U.S. stakeholders of the unique issues facing older people in the world’s poorest communities; raises money from US funders; and works with our global network to implement programs and policies that reduce poverty and discrimination in later life. We work to ensure that older people are included in international development and have access to emergency relief, financial security, health services, and basic human rights. HelpAge USA is part of the HelpAge Global Network, a unique worldwide alliance promoting the rights of older people in low- and middle-income countries. The only network of its kind, HelpAge has been empowering older people to lead healthy, secure, and active lives for more than 30 years.

Position Summary

The Director of Development will spearhead growth and provide leadership in identifying and securing foundation and corporate gifts and sponsorships. The Director of Development will report to the CEO and work closely with the HelpAge Global Network to build our donor base and increase revenue from a variety of USbased sources. A new position, the ideal candidate will have solid experience in fundraising and will be a skilled and creative communicator. The Director of Development will work collaboratively with our team providing support for marketing and special events.

Key responsibilities

1. Donor Development and Management

  • Work collaboratively with the CEO, consultants, and HelpAge International to create and implement strategies for donor cultivation and development to provide a diverse and stable funding base for HelpAge USA.
  • Develop concept notes, write grant proposals, and generate information for donor prospects.
  • Develop an ongoing stewardship plan for foundations and corporate sponsors to maintain and/or increase financial commitments.
  • Keep abreast of foundation trends and share knowledge as appropriate.
  • Represent HelpAge USA at networks and forums relevant to foundation funders.
  • Improve and maintain systems for tracking and managing donor outreach, giving, and ongoing stewardship.

2. Marketing & Event Support

  • Develop and manage HelpAge special events.
  • Provide leadership and oversight of online marketing.
  • Create marketing materials in collaboration with technical and program staff.

3. Other

  • Coordinate special projects as assigned.
  • Manage development interns.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years’ experience in foundation funding and corporate sponsorship.
  • Proven track record in achieving fundraising goals.
  • Superb relationship building/management skills with colleagues, donors, partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills.
  • Strong interest in international development and global issues.
  • Excellent editing, proofreading and writing skills.
  • Resourceful self-starter, team player, and output-oriented.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Prior experience working with a Customer Resource Management system, like Salesforce.
  • Strong interest in aging and older populations.
