About CitySprouts

The CitySprouts mission is to cultivate wonder for all children with hands-on learning

through urban gardening. Since its inception in 2001, CitySprouts’ two programs now

serve more than 7,000 students and 300 teachers in 21 public schools in Boston and

Cambridge. Based in public elementary and middle schools in Boston and Cambridge,

our School Partnership Program works closely with teachers to establish experiential

learning in the garden and integrate garden-based education in teachers’ practice and

school culture. Our Middle School Program is a summer and after school program for 11-

14 year olds that is grounded in scientific inquiry, engineering practices and

understanding food systems – starting from the school garden.

The Position

The Communications & Development Manager is a full-time, year round staff position.

This position plays a key role in communicating the organization's vision, unique model,

and in building and strengthening its stakeholder community. The Communication &

Development Manager conveys CitySprouts' story to a diverse audience through a variety

of media as well as through face-to-face relationship building in our partner school

communities and neighborhoods. The Communication & Development Manager takes

the lead in recruiting volunteers for all aspects of the organization's work, and helps staff

maintain and grow an active community of volunteers, families and teachers. The

Communications & Development Manager supports the Executive Director in

fundraising and donor management, and coordinates CitySprouts' annual

fundraising/outreach event each spring. The Communications & Development Manager

reports to the Executive Director.

We seek a focused, energetic person in this position to help our organization continue to

grow and deepen its impact on children, families and public school communities in

Boston and Cambridge.

Key Responsibilities:

Communications (60%):

● Develop content for monthly newsletters and social media outlets with differentiated messaging for CitySprouts’ various stakeholders

● Oversee the organization’s media, ensuring that content is up-to-date and consistent with mission; ensure media is fully utilized to support outreach and fundraising efforts

● Manage the organization’s volunteer recruitment and communications online and in person

● Update the website and oversee its maintenance

● Directly supervise an AmeriCorps service member 2-3 days a week and serve as liaison with their service member organization

Development (40%):

● Support executive director with donor management using Salesforce database (e.g. processing all donations, creating donor reports, creating mailing lists, managing fall & spring appeals)

● Coordinate the organization’s annual benefit event in the spring

● Build the organization’s donor base at select events, as needed

● Recruit and supervise development interns, fall and spring


Qualifications

● 3+ years of relevant work experience

● Experience with donor/customer databases, Salesforce preferred

● Experience with online engagement tools (e.g. Facebook, Twitter and Constant Contact)

● Excellent written communication skills, consistent attention to detail and follow through

● Strong interpersonal communication skills and a flexible, adaptable work style

● Strong belief in the mission, vision, and values of CitySprouts

● Experience in community organizing desirable

● Familiarity with Boston and/or Cambridge schools and neighborhoods desirable
