Public Counsel operates eight legal projects: Children’s Rights, Community Development, Consumer Rights, Homelessness Prevention, Immigrants’ Rights, Veterans’ Rights, the Audrey Irmas Project for Women & Girls’ Rights, and our impact litigation project, Opportunity Under Law. Public Counsel’s Homelessness Prevention Law Project (HPLP) serves individuals who are homeless or at high risk of becoming homeless. HPLP provides pro bono representation to homeless individuals and families to stabilize their housing and secure food and other vital benefits. In addition, HPLP assists unrepresented low-income litigants in unlawful detainer actions, and helps address tickets and warrants that present barriers to an individual’s housing and stability.

The Supervising Staff Attorney position is a full-time position based at Public Counsel’s 610 S. Ardmore office. The Supervising Staff Attorney will oversee Public Counsel’s general eviction defense programs. In response to the COVID-19 Crisis, various Federal, State and local funds have been dedicated to funding eviction defense efforts. Public Counsel currently participates in Stay Housed LA, a County-funded program designed to provide emergency eviction defense services as well as two State Bar funded projects also focused on eviction prevention and defense. This position will oversee a team of four or more Staff Attorneys and two or more paralegals dedicated to our expanding eviction defense services. The Supervising Attorney will also help maintain and grow relationships with funders and community partners, and manage the administrative aspects of Public Counsel’s eviction defense programs. It will involve off-site clinics, workshops and will require court appearances throughout Los Angeles County as needed. The Supervising Attorney will report to HPLP’s Directing Attorney.
