Project Description

Transgender people face a myriad of physical and mental health disparities relative to cisgender (non-transgender) people across their lifespan. Much less attention has been paid to the health and health care needs of transgender people living in non-urban areas, such as in Western Massachusetts and surrounding regions. The goal of the proposed research is to conduct a community needs assessment to understand the lived experiences, physical and mental health, and unmet health care and social service needs of transgender children, adolescents, and adults and families living in the non-urban region served by Cooley Dickinson Health Care (CDHC), in order to build a responsive Transgender Health Center based at CDHC. Utilizing a multi-phase mixed-methods approach grounded in a participatory population perspective, the aims of this project are to:

  • Map the healthcare organizations and providers currently serving transgender people in the region, identify gaps in health and social services offered, evaluate how delivery of services can be improved, and gather perspectives from providers and transgender communities about perceived barriers and facilitators to health care services.
  • Assess the lived experiences, physical and mental health, and met and unmet health care and social service needs of transgender people receiving care in Western Massachusetts and elsewhere in the region.
  • Estimate the size and characteristics of the transgender population in the region, using simulation modeling techniques, and determine the baseline health information and status needed to evaluate the impact of the program in five years on transgender communities in the region.

This planning study will gather invaluable information to improve the delivery of holistic, gender-affirming, and competent health care for transgender people. Findings from this study can inform the scope and scale of future health care services for transgender communities in Western Massachusetts and surrounding areas.

This planning study is a 12-month, grant funded, limited appointment position.
