The HIV Communications Consultant will be responsible for the oversight, management, and production of video and other media content. In collaboration with the Managing Director, Prevention, this position will ensure all content produced is aligned with the mission of GMHC, funding guidelines and expectations.

Essential Job Functions

The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job:


  • Develop and implement work plan to produce high quality videos for digital/social media platforms targeted to the public, people at risk for HIV infection, people affected by HIV/AIDS and those living with HIV and/or AIDS
  • Lead the facilitation of a focus group which will be used to inform the production of videos and other media content
  • Research and write client-ready content for GMHC Treatment Issues Newsletter
  • Promote the availability of prevention and supportive services, at GMHC, through digital/social media including but not limited to Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram and offline platforms
  • Maintain related records and reports from all program activities in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of community resources to provide program related information to clients
  • Assist with special projects and perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor


The HIV Communications Consultant will be expected to maintain continual communication with their immediate supervisor, as well as with other colleagues in the Community Health and Prevention services. This individual is expected to maintain boundaries for a healthy work environment and in compliance with all confidentiality laws and ethical principles applicable to the substances use as well as HIV and AIDS field.  

This position will be responsible for establishing and maintaining professional work relationships with community leaders and stakeholders, and maintain partnerships with outside establishments catering to youth and young adults.

Education and Certification


  • Master’s Degree in Public Health, Communications or other relevant discipline required

Required Experience:

  • Experience in conducting health-related community organizing. Equivalent of 5-7 years of related and extensive experience creating client ready public health content, including research, writing of content as well as video production
  • Experience working with the identified priority populations
  • Fluency in digital/social/media and demonstrated experience with Social Media tactics and the metrics which drive success with these tools

Related Skills or Knowledge:

  • Excellent written and oral communication and reporting skills required
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to work as a team member and independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the target population. Ability to interact comfortably with individuals and organizations
  • Facility with major office computer and health informatics software (e.g. MS Office, AIRS, E.H.R)
  • Familiarity with LGBTQ community of NYC is strongly preferred

Special Skills and Knowledge


In addition to the above-listed job responsibilities and educational requirements, the ideal candidate for this position possesses most or all of the following:

  • Desktop Publishing (DTP) skills preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise with new communications technologies

  • Must be available late afternoons and evenings, including some weekend hours
