The Managing Editor is responsible for the day-to-day management of three research journals and an ebooks program. The Managing Editor will work with editors, authors, reviewers, and other staff to develop and implement peer review and editorial initiatives to sustain and enhance the journals’ standing within the global biophysics community to ensure their continued success. The Managing Editor will collaborate with editors in planning and recruiting commissioned content and will provide customer service to authors, reviewers, and potential submitters to swiftly offer solutions in alignment with the journal’s mission and vision. This position maintains and updates processes and procedures in accordance with best practices, provides support to the Director of Publications, and oversight of publications staff regarding peer review, production, publication, and dissemination of content. The Managing Editor provides copywriting, copyediting, and proofreading support in connection with publications marketing efforts. The position also manages special projects as necessary.

Responsibilities

·      Supervise two FTEs

·      Oversee peer review systems/enhancements/new technologies and features

·      Manage day-to-day department operations and troubleshooting problems

·      Correspond with editors, authors, reviewers; responsibility for copyright and permissions requests, green card letters, article corrections, etc.

·      Plan and oversee journal special products and commissioned content: Special issues, article collections, abstract issue, “best of” issue, etc.

·      Manage manuscript standards and procedures (improving ms compliance systems); keeping all publication documents up to date: Instructions for authors, instructions for reviewers, submission forms, editor handbook, submission software handbook, etc. 

·      Manage publications marketing; oversight of press program, social media, etc.

·      Assist Director of Publications with data collection and reporting

·      Work with Director of Publications to explore, recommend, and implement new products and procedures for peer review/production (e.g., plagiarism software reviewer recognition, review training)

·      Stay informed about developments in scholarly publishing


Qualifications

•           5 years of experience in scholarly publishing

•           Supervisory experience

•           Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, or journalism or equivalent experience

•           Experience with online manuscript submission and peer-review systems (Editorial Manager, eJournal Press, ScholarOne, Bench Press, or similar system)

•           At least 2 years of content development such as writing, copy editing, proofreading

•           Experience with social media management and analytics reporting

•           Experience with content creation, communication, production, and dissemination techniques and methods to educate and inform

•           Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills and knowledge of grammar, usage, spelling

•           Organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects on asynchronous timelines, including strong ability to work to deadlines and to work independently

•           Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and diplomatically

•           Strong customer service approach to work

•           Experience with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Adobe Suite desirable 

•           Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment

•           Demonstrated experience working in a team environment
