Position Overview

TGIJP works alongside currently and formerly incarcerated transgender, gender-variant and intersex (TGI) people, advocating for them during incarceration and through the re-entry process.  TGIJP’s legal team works to build relationships with people inside of prisons and jails, provides direct advocacy against abuses experienced inside carceral institutions and through re-entry.


TGIJP is seeking a Legal Assistant to join our team to support the Legal Program. The Legal Assistant will focus on supporting the Legal Director in advocating for and supporting TGIJP members inside and outside of prisons using legal, policy, and organizing strategies.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support TGIJPs Mail Night and Legal Mail program by reviewing and filtering letters.  Provide response and advocacy for incarcerated individuals and provide resources and referrals, as an attorney representative.
  • Answering calls from prisons and jails.
  • Coordinate TGIJP prison and jail visits by booking visits and arranging staff clearances and transportation.
  • Engage in prison and jail visits as an attorney representative.
  • Organize quarterly legal clinics for TGIJP members.
  • Digitize legal mail records.
  • Connect volunteer legal workers to incarcerated people requesting TGI Prison Representation Network assistance.
  • Engage in court support and communicate with public defenders to advocate for TGIJP members.
  • Provide legal information to TGIJP members and ally organizers planning actions.
  • Engage in organizing activities and draft letters of support on policy issues.
  • Edit proposed policy language and engage with TGIJP’s policy work.


Required Qualifications

  • Experience with legal and policy advocacy 
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to write clearly 
  • Passion, creativity, professionalism, and good judgment
  • Enthusiasm for TGIJP’s work; a passionate belief in the leadership of Black transgender women
  • Demonstrated awareness of a commitment to a board range of social, racial, and economic justice issues and an understanding of the multiple communities TGIJP represents (emphasis on currently and formerly incarcerated TGI population)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience interfacing with the Prison Industrial Complex, including conducting legal visits inside of prisons and jails, and knowledge of the interworking of the criminal justice system.
  • Experience working in coalitions and experience working with pro-bono attorneys and advocates.
