The Center for Civic Education seeks an editorial assistant to provide extensive editorial and administrative support to the director of publishing and digital content. The Center (www.civiced.org) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization dedicated to fostering the development of informed, responsible participation in civic life by citizens committed to values and principles fundamental to constitutional democracy.

Basic Function

The editorial assistant will provide administrative support for the production of the Center’s 60-Second Civics podcast, as well as our newsletter, textbooks, ebooks, videos, and websites. This will include podcast editing and video creation, image research, podcast interview scheduling, copyediting, proofreading, basic document creation in Adobe InDesign, project management, and other duties as assigned. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of demonstrated experience in podcast audio and video production, editing, marketing, and distribution and skill as a writer and editor.

This position requires part-time employment. Work will be conducted remotely from your location. Occasional weekend and evening work and travel may be required. Must be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States. Must reside in the United States.

Responsibilities

Work with the director of publishing and digital content to carry out the following responsibilities:

  1. Edit our 60-Second Civics podcast recordings in Adobe Audition or Audacity
  2. Create videos of each podcast episode
  3. Conduct image research for podcast videos, website, social media, textbooks, marketing materials, and other products
  4. Create and edit images and graphics for podcast promotion
  5. Write podcast quizzes, descriptions, and social media posts
  6. Upload and distribute the podcast on various platforms
  7. Collaborate on podcast production, marketing, and distribution strategy
  8. Schedule podcast interviews
  9. Prepare textbook manuscripts for production
  10. Perform copyediting and proofreading
  11. Create, edit, and update website content
  12. Create and edit documents in Adobe InDesign
  13. Write copy for website and marketing materials
  14. Prepare images for publication
  15. Perform administrative and support tasks as required
  16. Travel to program events. Travel may take up to 10% of the position’s time.
  17. Maintain a positive attitude as a member of a team of diligent professionals trying to achieve the goals of the Center
  18. Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Center
  19. Perform other duties as assigned

Education

Degree: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field of study, such as digital media production, English, writing, journalism, communications, marketing, media studies, publishing, design, or education, is required.

Skills

●     Demonstrated experience in production, editing, marketing, and distribution of podcast audio and video content

●     Skill at creating and editing short videos

●     Detail oriented with strong editorial, verbal, organizational, and time management skills

●     Excellent grammar, punctuation, and writing skills a must

●     Basic design skills preferred

●     Ability to create compelling graphics and images for social media and website

●     Ability to master procedures quickly, set priorities, and work independently

●     Ability to meet deadlines and to multi-task

●     Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under deadline pressure

●     Must be able to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team

●     Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

●     Facility with social media

●     Experience with content management systems, such as Joomla and WordPress, a plus

●     Advanced skills in Adobe Audition or Audacity required

●     Experience using Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere Pro strongly preferred; Canva experience a plus

●     Knowledge of Word and Excel

●     Photo research experience a plus; familiarity with Creative Commons licensing a plus
