Organizational Overview

Fusion Partnerships, Inc., located in Baltimore MD, is a 501(c)(3) social benefit organization, whose mission is to be a catalyst for social justice by providing fiscal sponsorship, capacity building, collaborative opportunities and participatory grantmaking.  We support over 120 social justice programs, projects and grantees - our Partners - across the Baltimore region. As a Fiscal Sponsorship organization, Fusion Partnerships provides financial, legal, and related administrative support so that each of our Partner organizations can focus their attention on their direct work on the front lines, and to succeed in achieving their individual missions addressing specific needs of our community.


Fusion Partnerships has been providing fiscal sponsorship services since 2003. Since 2015, we have increased the number of our Partner organizations and our revenue by 300%. For the current fiscal year, we are staffed by 12 employees, with an annual budget of $14 million. Our Partners’ work is focused on-the-ground, providing knowledge and services to inform and support collaborative action and community engagement. Examples of the success in the work of our Partners includes: 


  • cultivating self-determination through Black land & food sovereignty;
  • ensuring mothers have access to quality care, self-care, doulas, and healing opportunities and resources;
  • enabling people in need to access food that would otherwise go to waste;
  • teaching young people and their families, skills that enhance their mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional health.


Fusion Partnership’s fiscal sponsorship oversight, support and vision to equitably support our Partners and Grantees, directly impacts their positive success. 


   


Position Overview


The Director of Finance (Director) position presents  a unique opportunity for the person hired, to have both an immediate, and a longer-term positive impact on how Fusion Partnerships supports and uplifts our Partners, in our active and progressive hub as a solution-focused social justice organization. The Director must show prior commitment to, participation in, and/or experience, affecting positive change in matters of social justice for communities, organizations, and/or members of marginalized communities. Ideally, the Director will have prior experience working collaboratively with a variety of small to medium nonprofits having  activities similar to those of our Partner organizations. The overall operations for each Partner is held by a leadership/advisory board structure and is not within Fusion’s control. However, Fusion ultimately holds significant responsibility for nonprofit compliance and Partners success in managing and meeting their financial goals.

The Director will provide leadership and direction to the organization, Board, and staff of Fusion, on all matters related to financial operations. They will also provide oversight for all related systems and processes used to guide the Partner organizations to maintain timely and compliant financial practices. Working with the staff and Board, the Director must promote and employ an entrepreneurial lens and approach to overseeing financial matters. As well,  they will manage a business strategy for Fusion that supports our continued growth and expansion, into the coming years. 

Once hired,the Director will conduct an evaluation of Fusion Partnerships’ financial and operational infrastructure.  The Director will work with staff and the Board to move forward the current research to determine how to best utilize these resources to:

  1. evaluate the relevance and effectiveness  of current systems and processes;
  2. determine what is needed in order to maintain and strengthen Fusion’s success in accomplishing its related goals;
  3. identify and initiate systems and process changes, secure needed resources, and set and meet timelines for implementation; and
  4. ensure that financial resources coming into Fusion, (e.g., funding sources, business projections, broader external economic factors) along with resources that are going out (e.g., expenses, service provision, etc.), will support Fusion Partnerships in meeting its mission and commitments to provide exceptional guidance and financial operations support that strengthen our Partners.

Reporting to Fusion’s Board of Directors, the Director is a member of, and works in partnership with Leadership Team members including the Director of Operations and the Director of Administration and HR.  This position supervises three financial services staff including: a Staff Accountant, and  Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable staff members. 


In collaboration with the Leadership Team, the Director is responsible for ensuring that all business, financial, and grants management practices are consistently applied by all staff, and by Partner organizations, in compliance with Fusion Partnerships’ policies and requirements, as well as with industry, legal, and ethical standards. To this end, the Director is charged with providing effective management and oversight of the accounting and financial reporting functions and with ensuring excellence in the delivery of technical assistance services by Fusion staff, to our Partners and other organizations. 


The Director must be consistent in providing oversight of management practices for Fusion’s financial operations, and must be flexible and timely in addressing matters as they arise. They must be adaptable and able to thrive in a continually evolving, deadline-driven environment that requires working with a variety of Partner organizations that have different missions, organizational structures, resources, and needs, as well as different timelines and abilities in meeting their obligations.  


This is a full-time, exempt position and requires work to be done on-site at Fusion Partnerships facilities. The Director will undergo a background and financial screening check. Periodic regional travel may be required and the Director will participate in, and may assist in leading Partner and/or community activities, and in otherwise representing Fusion Partnerships out in our communities.


Essential Job Functions

Financial Management and Oversight (Operational and Strategic)

  • Oversee financial systems, strategies and activities as well as banking and other external business relationships.
  • Continuously review and maintain excellent financial controls, policies, and procedures. Ensure efficient functioning and documentation for all financial systems/processes including receipts, disbursements, billing, bookkeeping, budgeting, and accounting. 
  • Supervise and oversee the accounting, accounts receivable, and accounts payable team members, ensuring accurate and timely financial information. Review and evaluate reconciliation of balance sheet accounts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Acts as the custodian of all funds. Ensure that proper cash controls are implemented to mitigate risk. Initiate corrective action where called for.
  • Review, analyze and track business models for the organization and conduct regular predictive financial analyses and reports to provide insights into the organization’s operations and business plans. 
  • Ensure accountability and compliance at all levels across all related entities. 
  • Implement a Partner education and training curriculum to enhance Partner’s financial literacy, budget building skills, and financial forecasting activities.


Business Development, Planning, and Strategic Engagement

  • Serve as the financial liaison/staff to the Board of Directors.
  • Develop a deep understanding of all Fusion Partnerships’ business processes, and the organization, programs, and initiatives to provide strategic financial consulting, modeling and financial analysis within the leadership team and  Board. 
  • Lead organizational budgeting, cash flow and forecasting processes. Work with staff and the Board to develop and implement Fusion core budgets, and work with Partner leadership members to develop and implement Partner and Project budgets.
  • Serve as a leading team member in the development and implementation of a long-range strategic plan, working collaboratively with staff and Board members.
  • Develop financial plans and forecasts for the organization as well as for all Partners.
  • Monitor, research, analyze, and report on the financial results of Fusion operations and Partners/Projects each month. 
  • Represent Fusion Partnerships to our financial Partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials, etc.
  • In coordination with the Partner Engagement Team, provide support to strengthen Partner organizations in their financial planning and analysis practices to guide best organizational management practices. 
  • Support the development and implementation of finance related training for Fusion Partners staff in collaboration with Finance and PEC Team members. Ensure that relevant and effective one-on-one finance training is provided to all Partner project leaders, ensuring that it is documented and periodically re-presented.



Financial Administration and Management

  • Support staff and Partners by providing analysis and interpretation of complex financial and compliance requirements and processes for Fusion’s and Partners’ contracts and grant agreements, and other administrative requirements, etc. 
  • Set and monitor standard approaches and policies for preparing and reviewing budgets and budget notes.
  • Ensure that there is an accurate and efficient internal system for monitoring and ensuring grant compliance.
  • In collaboration with FinanceTeam members, prepare systems to review and consistently monitor and report financial information for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Continuously seek to streamline operational processes that will enhance accounting as well as the financial planning and analysis functions. 
  • Lead the in-process financial system transition from QuickBooks to a more robust cloud based financial system (TBD),  in order to increase real-time access to data for Partners.
  • Coordinate audits and proper filing of all Fusion Partnerships tax returns.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance by Fusion and all Partners regarding all financial functions.  Fusion Partnerships holds ultimate legal responsibility for all matters


Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and/or public accounting experience is required. An MBA and/or CPA Certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of broad nonprofit financial experience with experience in gathering and evaluating complex financial information, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting data, analysis, compliance, expense control and reporting.
  • A detailed understanding of finance and cost accounting functions for multiple funding sources is critical. 
  • Experience working in a senior financial management role and in collaborating with leadership team members, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies.
  • Significant experience in and knowledge of nonprofit accounting, 
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage staff to work collaboratively and with flexibility. Work to develop and empower staff as leaders from the bottom up, and lead from the top down.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills are required.
  • Must have exceptional verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Must be able to clearly communicate complex information and business concepts so that they are understood by a wide and varied audience.
  • Experience working with financial system transitions and automatization processes is preferred.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other accounting reporting tools is required.     
  • Must be highly organized and self-motivated with attention to detail and a commitment to following through to completion and/or resolution.
  • Initial performance reviews as part of theDirector Onboarding process will be given at 6 months and one year after employment.

Salary Range & Benefits

  • Annual salary range: $90,000 - $140, 000 based on experience relevant to the job requirements.
