Assistant Program Managers assist Program Managers in planning and executing all activities related to academic summer residential and day programs for approximately 10,000 academically talented students annually, including assisting with direct management and day-to-day supervision of at least 1-3 program sites.


Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Communicate with and advise students, parents, and school representatives
  • Respond to and appropriately address student, parent, and staff concerns
  • Recruit, hire, train, and manage the performance of, and evaluate Summer Programs staff
  • Assist with communications with host institutions and vendors to ensure academic, residential, and other logistical needs of Summer Programs sites are met
  • Provide curriculum development in an academic area and provide instructional support and guidance to instructional staff
  • Participate in or chair departmental committees
  • Edit and occasionally develop manuals, handbooks, and other documents, for students, families, and staff to provide information related to Summer Programs practices, policies, and procedures
  • Assist in establishing department priorities and contribute to decision making about Summer Programs policies and practices


Minimum Required Education and Related Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s preferred
  • Prefer degree in applied math, economics, computer science, or engineering
  • Two years of experience teaching (college or pre-college) or in residential life (college or boarding school)
  • Experience with academically talented students highly desired
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula


Special Skills and Knowledge:

Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to access and transmit information using a computer
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone, email, and possibly face to face with internal and external audiences and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings


Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position has no direct reports but assists a Program Manager in the supervision of approximately 150 summer staff members at the assigned program sites.


Additional Information:

  • Must be able to travel and work some nights and weekends.
  • Summer travel typically includes 3 residencies, each 1-2 weeks long.
  • Extenuating circumstances could require additional time on site.
  • Sites assignments are to be determined and are subject to change, but could include responsibility for sites overseas.
  • If assigned to overseas sites, one, longer residency of 4-6 weeks would be required.
  • Candidate must be able and willing to travel to any site assigned.
