POSITION OVERVIEW

At this critical time for lower-income, frontline communities and people of color, JMA is uniquely positioned to advance a powerful agenda for equitable job creation and expanded access to training for historically underrepresented groups. As the Senior National Policy Coordinator, you will support the National Program by conducting research, writing reports, and maintaining relationships with federal agencies and Congressional staff. 

The Senior National Policy Coordinator reports to the National Program Director. This position can be located in New York, NY or Chicago, IL. The anticipated start date of this position is May 3, 2021.  

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:  

  • Performing research on policies and laws related to JMA’s work
  • Engaging with Congressional and federal agency staff on policy development
  • Interfacing with JMA’s partners in the labor community and in our state coalitions
  • Writing reports and op-eds; drafting policy and briefing documents 
  • Collaborating with other members of the National Program team and other JMA teams
  • Representing JMA at events and conferences

Required Qualifications

The ideal Senior National Policy Coordinator candidate excels in relationship-building, has solid writing and verbal communication skills, and has strong project management skills. You should have most of the following qualifications:

  • At least five years of policy experience, including federal policy.
  • A law degree
  • Demonstrated experience in writing clearly for a wide range of audiences, including the ability to succinctly summarize findings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic, racial, gender, and social justice movements.
  • Ability to perform research thoroughly, efficiently, and objectively
  • Ability to work independently and to take initiative. Ability to effectively manage a workload with competing priorities and collaborate as part of a team. 
  • Strong interpersonal and coordination skills. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinking and initiative in identifying key stakeholders that are critical to a campaign’s success and thoughtfulness in engaging them in campaign efforts
  • Ability to approach complex challenges thoughtfully and diplomatically
  • Experience and comfort working in multicultural settings 
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, empathy, and social skills in work and interpersonal interactions
  • Interest in working across teams and taking part in JMA committees
  • Ability to travel to Washington, DC, on a regular basis, once travel can be conducted safely and in-person meetings resume

Preferred But Not Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working with unions 
  • Knowledge of political landscape and dynamics in federal policy making and within labor and/or racial and environmental justice spaces
  • Experience in drafting policy
  • Experience in workers’ rights, infrastructure, or the transportation sector

Salary

$62,000 - $75,000Dependent on location and years of experience

Benefits

Compensation/Benefits:

Compensation for this role is $62,000-$75,000 dependent location and years of experience. Staff who work in New York will qualify for a higher starting salary. Benefits include full health and dental benefits at no premium cost to the employee, up to $100/month cell phone reimbursement, generous time off including 12 personal days off a year, 12 paid vacation days, 12 sick days, 12 paid holidays, paid family leave and eligibility to apply for a paid sabbatical after 5 years. JMA also provides a 401(k) plan with 5% employer contribution after 6 months of employment and professional development opportunities.  JMA staff are working remotely for the remainder of 2021 and receive a monthly Work From Home stipend of $75/month.
