Starting Salary: $60,000-65,000, DOQ


Benefits: New hire will receive excellent health insurance, dental, vision, life, short-term disability and long-term disability benefits with premiums paid in full as well as three week paid time off each year (earned on an accrual basis). Employees may add dependents to health and dental coverage, Abortion Care Network will cover half the premium costs of qualified dependents.


Travel: Willingness to travel approximately 1-2 times per month within the continental US. Travel will be required to support team work, attend required conferences and professional development opportunities, as well as to meet with foundations interested in supporting our work.


Organization Summary: Abortion Care Network (ACN) is a network of independent abortion care providers (Indies) and the allies who support them. Indies face a distinct set of obstacles. ACN works to eliminate these challenges through direct support and collaboration with other reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations. Our network of Indies and allies work to advance our collective goal of equal and just access to dignified and exceptional abortion care.

ACN is a small, national organization made up of nine full-time staff, and an active board of directors who live across the country. This is a new organizational position and we look forward to welcoming a Development Director to our dedicated team. Over the last 4 years, Abortion Care Network has grown significantly in size and is intentionally working to create a more representative and inclusive organization as part of our growth. We strive as a body of abortion care providers and allies to transform our perspectives and practices, and to challenge abortion stigma, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, ethnocentrism and oppression in all its forms. This commitment stems from the concerns and realities of abortion providers, and the people they serve. This work is ongoing and evolving and we are seeking a candidate who is both personally and professionally committed to joining us in this work.

Position Summary: ACN is seeking a full-time Development Director to lead our organization’s fundraising efforts by developing and implementing the organization's development plan. This position will work directly under the supervision of the Executive Director. The Development Director will be part of a small, hardworking team, and will be asked to jump in and provide other support as needed. The ideal candidate is collaborative, innovative, flexible, extremely well organized and has previous development experience. We are particularly interested in candidates who are willing to take risks, try new approaches and push against the philanthropic norms that do not serve our communities.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Develop, implement and oversee an effective fundraising plan that is in-line with our strategic plan in collaboration with the Executive Director;
  • Manage the process of identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individual and corporate donors, including the development of strong appeals and a stewardship program;
  • Research and recommend foundation grant applications, draft and submit proposals, and provide timely and accurate follow-up reporting for grants received;
  • Manage a grants calendar. Work with ACN staff to provide regular updates and schedule calls with current Program Officers. Work with program staff to complete grant reports and grants by deadlines;
  • Coordinate Board Members’ fundraising efforts and provide updates and reports to Board of Directors as needed;
  • Develop and coordinate print and online visual donor communications and collateral related to fundraising including newsletters, mid-year and year-end mailings, and email-blasts in collaboration with the Communications Director;
  • Draft, print and mail or email gift acknowledgements in a timely manner;
  • Gather quotes, video and other feedback and information from our members to incorporate into grants and annual appeals;
  • Enter and update information into our donor database, including contact details, gifts, donations, etc.;
  • Oversee fundraising efforts for the annual conference sponsorships in collaboration with the Membership Director;
  • Provide development advice and professional development supports to our members’ fundraising initiatives as capacity allows;
  • Provide support to Executive Director in preparing our annual audit;
  • Keep information about Abortion Care Network up-to-date on giving websites and platforms;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Preferred experience:

  • 3 years of development or relevant experience directly related to above list of responsibilities;
  • Experience working with Foundation Officers and extensive grant writing experience;
  • Ability to work independently and as a team; able to handle multiple tasks and projects;
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage time effectively, meet tight deadlines;
  • Experience with non-profit organizations;
  • Good interpersonal skills, flexibility, team player, enthusiastic, and motivated;
  • Mac proficient. Computer skills, including Microsoft office (Excel, Word, etc), data entry and spreadsheet management;
  • Experience with donor databases;
  • Organizing and coordinating skills, willingness to learn, able to receive instruction and give/receive feedback;
  • Strong speaking and written communication skills;
  • Innovative and can think outside a traditional development approach;
  • A strong commitment to reproductive, racial, social, and economic justice.
