Job Overview:

United for Brownsville (UB) is looking for a highly-organized Project Manager with effective communications skills. We are a new, innovative, and rapidly-growing Collective Impact initiative funded by the Robin Hood Fund for Early Learning to improve language and social-emotional developmental outcomes for 0-3 year olds in the neighborhood of Brownsville, Brooklyn. This position is supported through 2020, with additional time being contingent on the success of fundraising efforts for UB.


UB is a partnership between SCO Family of Services and Community Solutions, which have deep roots in the community: SCO has spent over three decades providing social services for children and families here, and Community Solutions has been working here for over 10 years on neighborhood stabilization and revitalization. Community Solutions also operates the Gregory Jackson Center, which is the home of UB. The person hired for this position will be an employee of Community Solutions.


UB itself started in the fall of 2017, completed its strategic planning and recruitment phases in the spring of 2018, and has been fully-operational since May. We are a backbone organization that supports the work of two leadership groups of local stakeholders: the Family Advisory Board (FAB), which is composed of parents and caregivers of young children, and the Provider Action Team (PAT), which is composed of social service providers.


Among the principles that drive UB’s work are the following:

  • pursuit of mutually-reinforcing, cross-sector activities that fill in service gaps


The PAT and FAB have been jointly planning several actions since their first meetings, and we are ready to launch them in 2019, which necessitates the help of a Project Manager.


The successful applicant for this position will be a results-oriented manager, systems-thinker, and effective communicator who is able to help translate the vision for success articulated by UB staff and advisory bodies into practical, well-organized actions and communications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Project Manager will support the UB Co-Directors to:

  • Manage logistics and relationships within and between our advisory bodies (FAB, PAT, and Leadership Council) by facilitating communication, overseeing meeting/event planning, and partnering with stakeholders to ensure opportunities for cross-group collaboration are realized
  • Grow our pilot activities into successful and replicable approaches to improving outcomes for infants and toddlers in Brownsville by:
  • taking steps to include sustainability planning at each stage of project development
  • learning about effective approaches to similar work, and
  • cultivating relationships with stakeholders in other NYC communities
  • Develop and execute communications strategies for our advisory bodies, CS/SCO leadership, and the general public by using social media, local professional and social networks, as well as traditional press and other earned media opportunities
  • Help coordinate meetings, planning sessions, and work between UB Co-Directors and three part-time consultants.


Qualifications:

  • Project leadership experience and proven ability to develop effective cross-sector teams and manage multiple timelines simultaneously
  • Experience effectively communicating with diverse stakeholders through multiple media (e.g. email, website, phone, text message, video chat, social media, etc.) and devising and implementing communications strategies to help advance specific projects or an organization’s priorities
  • Experience preferred in community organizing, education, or early childhood social services, health services, or preventive services.
  • Familiarity with the following:
  • Brownsville, Brooklyn, or similar communities, or the ability to learn quickly
  • Communications, publicity, or related areas of work
  • Familiarity with collective impact or participatory planning is a plus
  • Excellent written and communication skills and interpersonal skills; able to make presentations to small and mid-sized audiences in-person or remotely.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • The Project Manager will supervise an intern whose responsibilities include documenting meeting minutes, meeting materials preparation and contributing to meeting debriefs and strategic planning sessions

Travel Requirements:

Travel is required within Brownsville and New York City for meetings, and out of town travel for conferences and training may occasionally be required.


Work Environment:

  • The employee will work from CS’ open-plan offices in Brownsville and Manhattan.
  • The job will require attending monthly evening meetings and may include occasional long hours and weekend work.
