Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago is seeking a full-time Communications Manager to work with a multidisciplinary research and policy team to improve child welfare agencies’ services to children, youth and families. This person will develop strategies to communicate effectively about child welfare research, translate research and data analysis, and convey arguments for positive change to a broad range of stakeholders, including caseworkers, advocates, and state legislators.

The preferred candidate will bring experience with communicating about state-level policy and practice, and experience with strong visual representation of information. The Communications Manager will report to the project director, and will work in consultation with Chapin Hall’s Director of Communication and Dissemination. This position provides an opportunity to work as part of a dynamic and integrated team of social science researchers and national experts in social policy. Experience with and understanding of human service delivery and/or child welfare systems are preferred.

This position is contingent upon funding. The position will be based in Chicago.


In partnership with researchers and policy staff on the project, the primary responsibilities of the position are as follows:

  • Translate research findings for policymakers, social service leaders, and elected officials.
  • Develop outreach strategies for key audiences, using digital channels, social and traditional media, and other platforms.
  • Develop communications products—including PowerPoint presentations, policy briefs, website content, fact sheets, blogs— appropriate to targeted audiences and events.
  • Provide communication support for events, which could include briefings, panel discussions, testimony, and webinars.
  • Draft, edit, and revise project reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • BA or MA in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Media Studies, or related field.


  • Seven to 10 years’ experience in a similar role preferred.
  • Experience with PowerPoint and visual representation of data and research.

  • Knowledge of strategic communications best practices.
  • Ability to translate complex research into clear, compelling and tailored content for targeted audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to be a team player and collaborator who works well in large and diverse teams.
  • Proven ability to set objectives, measure success, and meet (or exceed) goals.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and maintain focus in a fast-paced environment.
  • High proficiency and fluency in all Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work independently, show strong initiative, and a resourceful approach to problem-solving and learning.
  • Experience working with communications vendors on products including graphics, data visualization, videos, etc.
  • Flexibility to travel outside of Chicago.
  • Passion for social services and knowledge of the policy and practice landscape preferred.
  • Comfortable with data and experience working with social scientists to translate data into meaningful information preferred.
