Job Title: Deputy Director

Classification: Salaried/full time

Reports To: Executive Director


ABOUT LA COLMENA: La Colmena empowers immigrant workers and their families through education, organizing, culture, and economic development. To this end, La Colmena provides a space where workers learn and assert their rights, develop their leadership and become active members in their community

POSITION OVERVIEW:  The Deputy Director will have both internal and external facing responsibilities, ranging from member and project management (business development, framing of key approaches, high-quality program delivery, written products) to administration (information technology, reporting, facilities), and human resources (recruiting, mentoring, career progression). The Deputy Director will partner closely with the Executive Director to plan La Colmena’s future growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for the organization’s programs.

ESSENTIAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Organization Building

  • Partner with the Executive Director in essential internal leadership activities (human resources, administration, and organizational planning).
  • Manage information technology, human resources (recruiting, reviews, staff deployment/workload balancing, career progression) with related internal communications and budgeting/finance duties.


Team Management and Development

  • Support the Worker Center and Organizing teams to deliver outstanding work.
  • Establish consistent, objective program performance standards of accountability
  • Develop and implement a system to evaluate the skill, experience, and professional development needs of all staff.
  • Implement a professional development program to address employee experience and skill gaps.
  • Work with staff to develop objective performance measurements across all sites, to ensure consistent, high-quality evaluation and goal setting for all employees.
  • Recruit, hire, and oversee training and orientation of all staff members.
  • Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities.

Other: Support fundraising efforts as needed, including 

  • Reviewing and editing proposals
  • Attending meetings with existing and potential funders
  • Assisting with coordinating special events 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience in a management position, including developing and managing  staff 
  • Work experience with a nonprofit

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with foundation funding
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Knowledge of Staten Island
