St. Nicks Alliance, an innovative civic anchor in North Brooklyn, is seeking an experienced social worker or mental health counselor to provide counseling services to children who attend an elementary school in North Brooklyn. St. Nicks Alliance refers to our counselors as Transformational Coaches to reflect their true work of supporting short and long-term change for our children, their families and our community.

Transformational Coaches are a critical part of St. Nicks Alliance’s integrated School Success Model, designed to support elementary age children who are struggling behaviorally and academically. The Transformational Coach is part of a school-based team of three full-time and 14+ part-time staff, all working together and with school personnel to provide a holistic approach to the child’s success. We offer interventions including: direct counseling, a comprehensive afterschool center including academic and socio-emotional enrichment, advocacy, and family supports to gain employment, affordable housing and referrals.

With support from St. Nicks Alliance’s Clinical Supervisor, the Transformational Coach will manage a caseload of approximately 33 children with the assistance of at least one MSW intern. The Transformational Coach provides both 1:1 counseling services and small group interventions using a variety of age-appropriate methods to meet and respond to the social, emotional and mental health needs of children. The Transformational Coach also provides crisis intervention, alongside other afterschool staff who are trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention. IN addition, the Transformational Coach is an important contributor to refining St. Nicks Alliance’s transformational policies and procedures as well as using data to drive transformational services.

The Successful Candidate will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Conduct needs assessment of youth and prioritize objectives.
  • Develop focused, achievable individual service plans that outline short- and long-term goals.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching sessions that guide youth through stages of transformation and socio-emotional development.
  • Conduct crisis intervention
  • Coordinate and facilitate groups designed to address youth challenges and lead to self-understanding and change
  • Cultivate and make internal and external referrals for services as needed and provide regular follow up
  • Build strong relationships and collaborations with families, St. Nicks Alliance staff, and external institutions (school, social service, mental health providers, etc.)
  • Utilize organization’s ETO system: maintain case records, track inputs/student progress and data integrity (data accuracy, timeliness of entry into the data system, and completeness)
  • Use performance data to continually improve service to youth and progress toward intended outcomes
  • Ensure compliance with the requirements of various funding sources

The Successful Candidate will meet these minimum qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work or Counseling
  • Min. 3 years of counseling experience with elementary-age youth
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication and computer skills.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Ability to work some evenings.
  • Fluency in Spanish a strong plus.
