We have an exciting opportunity for the full-time position of Volunteer Support Specialist. Reporting to the Director of Volunteer Engagement, this mobilized position, with a GSEMA base in either Waltham or Middleboro, will service the Metro West area of Boston.  

  

The Volunteer Support Specialist is responsible for providing excellent customer service and management oversight of Girl Scout Volunteers, especially troop leaders and community administrative leadership teams. With a focus on membership retention and renewal in their assigned area, the Volunteer Support Specialist works collaboratively with other departments, to ensure volunteers are prepared to deliver a high-quality Girl Scout Leadership Experience.  

  

Key Responsibilities:   

  • Provides volunteers with advice and support in all facets of the volunteer management system including recruitment, placement, training, retention, recognition and evaluation.  
  • Proactively works to retain members by organizing, implementing and promoting girl and volunteer renewal and is responsible for specific retention goals in their geographic area.  
  • Interprets the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, Volunteer Essentials, council policies and safety procedures to act as a primary expert in all areas of the troop pathway for the effective delivery of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.  
  • Collaborates on the development of innovative strategies for supporting girl and adult membership through the troop and service unit structure.  
  • Appoints and mentors administrative volunteers, including Service Unit Coordinator, Membership Promoter, New Leader Mentor, and Treasurer, ensuring they are prepared to fulfill their community leadership volunteer roles.  
  • Attends community volunteer meetings (some evenings and weekends required).   
  • Collaboratively identifies volunteers for appointment to additional volunteer roles such as Product Program Mentors, Regional Delegates, committee members, etc.  
  • Assists in planning, promoting and executing Volunteer Conferences, Volunteer Recognition Luncheon and other volunteer events.  
  • Promotes volunteer trainings, girl programs, events, camp, travel, and troop volunteerism to volunteers, girls, families and community members.  
  • Contacts newly formed troop leaders to offer support, and visits new troops as needed to provide support and oversight of quality.  
  • Reorganizes troop leadership in conjunction with recruitment and conversion teams when troop volunteers resign or are removed.  
  • Supports Customer Care to solve more involved volunteer, troop and service unit problems.  
  • Optimizes use of technology to support customer by documenting and utilizing Volunteer Systems (Salesforce) to track volunteer communications.  
  • Mediates volunteer relationships when necessary, and appropriately reports more sensitive issues to senior staff.  
  • May facilitate, develop or record GSEMA volunteer trainings as needed.  
  • Ensures Girl Scouting is open to all girls and adults by delivering the Girl Scout message of pluralism and diversity to members of the council and members of their assigned community.  
  • Maintains confidentiality on behalf of the Girl Scout organization and in accordance with the GSEMA Comprehensive Information Security Program (CISP).  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.   

  

Skills and Qualifications:   

  • Bilingual skill is strongly preferred.  
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a membership organization.   
  • Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in related field with experience in volunteer management and support.  
  • Capacity to, independently and as part of a team, plan, organize and prioritize work, while managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Ability to use sound judgment in decision-making, problem solving, and to work independently.  
  • Strong public relations skills and ability to develop community collaborations.  
  • Strong decision making and conflict resolution skills. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables and personalities.  
  • Ability to adapt well to changing circumstances, direction and strategy.  
  • Must be able to communicate clearly orally and in writing.  
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, and be willing to travel throughout the council.  
  • Valid driver’s license and access to motor vehicle, necessary to carry out responsibilities.  
  • Ability to work with individuals of diverse backgrounds and ages.  
  • Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Windows and Office software; adept at utilizing social networking; experience using Salesforce preferred.   

  

Work Environment:  

This position will be primarily mobilized with time spent in communities served, as well as home and other GSEMA offices, as directed.
