Lead data-driven research at a nonprofit seeking equity for NYC's public open spaces.

The Research & Policy Analyst will work closely with the Director of Research & Policy to create research reports, tools for advocates, and events. Using well-developed skills in writing, mapping, public presentation, research, data analysis, communications, design, and outreach, the Analyst will contribute to NY4P’s work in furthering park equity for all New Yorkers.


Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in urban planning, public policy, or a related field
  • At least one year of related professional experience
  • Or an equivalent combination of advanced education and related experience

NY4P seeks a self-starting individual with strong research and writing skills, demonstrable people skills, the ability to work with and analyze data, mapping and design experience, and excellent public presentation skills. Candidates must have the ability to initiate and complete long-term projects as well as the flexibility to work as part of a collaborative office environment. Candidates must be able to train and supervise graduate student interns as well as teams of seasonal field research interns. Qualified candidates will be able to communicate complex processes, policy arguments, and analytical findings to varied audiences through their writing, mapping, and public speaking.

This position requires a demonstrated ability to develop and carry out high-quality research and analysis and produce polished reports and presentations under general supervision.

Candidates will have proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs, the Adobe Creative Suite, and ESRI’s ArcGIS. This position requires a valid Driver’s License and willingness to drive or take public transportation throughout the city, and requires variable evening and weekend hours to staff internal and external events.


Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate NY4P's data-driven projects, including the Open Space Profiles and the Open Space Index, through all project phases:
  2. Hire, train, and supervise graduate interns and field research interns
  3. Identify local stakeholders in collaboration with the Outreach team
  4. Develop relationships with local advocates and community organizations
  5. Conduct results analyses
  6. Create analytical and illustrative maps
  7. Draft final reports
  8. Supervise the work of a graphic designer for publication design
  9. Communicate findings to NY4P staff, board, and in public settings to stakeholders and advocates
  10. Strategize impacts on NY4P advocacy
  11. Work with NY4P communications staff and/or consultants to craft a press plan
  12. Present findings at public meetings
  13. Create research, writing, mapping, and presentations on various other projects in coordination with the Director of Research & Policy. Past examples of these kinds of projects have included tracking public protests in open spaces and policy papers on issues like alternative funding sources for parks.
  14. Support the Director of Research & Policy in producing public events and convenings, such as the Open Space Dialogues panel series.
  15. Monitor open space-related issues in New York City and farther afield. Evaluate potential effects on open spaces, and advise the senior staff in formulating NY4P’s positions. Develop strategies to advocate for improvements. Attend public hearings, prepare and deliver testimony, and coordinate release of relevant information to the public. Represent NY4P at meetings, and act as a liaison to public officials’ offices. These issues include:
  16. local zoning and planning actions
  17. park-related legislation and initiatives at the City, State, and Federal levels
  18. real estate development plans
  19. community initiatives
  20. Build and maintain good working relationships with partner organizations and stakeholders.
  21. Support the Outreach & Programs Dept.’s public events, campaigns, and other matters as needed.
  22. Contribute to NY4P’s social media, print, radio and TV communications in collaboration with Communications Dept. staff.
  23. Present to NY4P’s Board of Directors and Policy Committee on relevant issues and work projects/products as required.
  24. Assist Development and Finance staff on fundraising, report-backs, and fiscal matters as needed.
  25. Participate in activities including staff meetings, strategic planning, and other administrative tasks.
