Media Matters for America - a progressive, Washington, D.C-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media - seeks a candidate with experience researching and identifying trends in the media, a strong analytical background, and the ability to develop and generate content quickly in response to media coverage to serve as the Morning Researcher on the Rapid Response Team with the Research & Engagement Department.


The role of the Morning Researcher is to 1) monitor news programs and social media during mornings, with a focus on identifying conservative misinformation; 2) post relevant clips and content for public consumption on the Media Matters website and social media; and 3) gather internal research when needed. The hours for the Morning Researcher are 5 a.m. through 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.


  • The Rapid Response Researcher reports to the Deputy Director of Research & Engagement, Rapid Response.


Percentage of time spent on each area will vary according to skills, needs, and experience.

  • Monitoring: Researchers are responsible for identifying, researching, and rebutting false narratives that advance a conservative agenda. Aside from watching cable news, monitoring duties may occasionally include watching other news outlets and listening to prominent right-wing radio shows, reading blogs and traditional print publications, and examining social media to identify emerging or trending falsehoods. Researchers are responsible for passing along key takeaways and observations from what they have monitored to other members of the team.

  • Clipping: Researchers are responsible for clipping problematic segments, for both the Media Matters website and social media, following internal protocols.

  • Narrative Building: Researchers are also responsible for tracking larger media narratives and the key strands of misinformation Media Matters is engaged in. Researchers should keep close track of social media narratives.

  • Research: Researchers are responsible for producing detailed and in-depth research that serves as the backbone for Media Matters content. Researchers will often turn this research into published content.

  • Documenting: Researchers are responsible for summarizing the media they monitor to Media Matters’ internal archive and for flagging emerging and persistent strands of misinformation – including but not limited to problematic rhetoric and imagery.

  • Editing: Researchers are often responsible for editing content posted to the Media Matters website for content and clarity using appropriate AP and MMFA style guides.


  • Minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

  • 1-2 years of political or media experience preferred. Additional experience would be a plus

  • Interest in media and understanding of the effects conservative misinformation has on public debate

  • Breadth of knowledge about and awareness of current political and policy issues

  • Familiarity with the intersection of social media and news, particularly on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube (In particular, a familiarity with using Twitter is a plus)

  • Ability to quickly synthesize information about new topics

  • Understanding of the 24-hour news cycle and how to identify elements with viral potential, particularly on Twitter

  • Strong analytical skills and high attention to detail

  • Can work independently day-to-day, but loop in additional team members as they arrive

  • Able to thrive in fast-paced and high-pressure situations

  • Can recognize emerging trends and generate creative content ideas
