    Description

    Advocates for Children of New Jersey (ACNJ), a statewide child advocacy organization located in Newark, is seeking a full-time Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to handle all fiscal and accounting functions of the organization. ACNJ has an annual budget of over $3 million, a staff of 18 people, and an endowment of $12 million. ACNJ's revenues are based on 19 foundation grants, donations, and its investment income. ACNJ does not accept government grants. The CFO will report to ACNJ's President/CEO and to the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees. Experience in nonprofit fiscal management is essential.

    Responsibilities:

    • Prepare ACNJ's annual budget in consultation with the ACNJ Finance Committee and CEO.
    • Work with ACNJ's investment manager to monitor ACNJ's portfolio, provide quarterly reports to the Board of Trustees and flag any immediate action needed by the Board.
    • Manage ACNJ’s banking relationships.
    • Prepare individual grant budgets and expenditure reports for ACNJ's multiple foundation grants.
    • Track ACNJ's expenditures, allocating to correct projects and functions, including restricted and unrestricted funding.
    • Maintain financial, staff, and program activity records for grant reports, board reports, audit, and Form 990 preparation.
    • Develop and monitor annual budget, revenue projections, and cash flow forecasts for CEO and Board of Trustees.
    • Provide staff support to the ACNJ Finance Committee and present financial statements and reports to the Committee and the Board of Trustees.
    • Oversee the annual agency audit process, preparing financial reports & associated footnotes for the annual audit conducted by an independent CPA firm.
    • Process accounts payable and receivable, internal controls, maintaining accounting records in QuickBooks.
    • Process payroll using ADP and contributions to ACNJ's 403(b) plan.

    Requirements:

    • 3-5 years of increasing levels of nonprofit accounting experience, including a leadership role.
    • Degree in accounting and CPA preferred or BA with commensurate experience accepted.
    • Experienced in Grant budgeting and financial reporting.
    • Proficient in QuickBooks Desktop and Microsoft office.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • High attention to detail.

    ACNJ’s offices are located in Newark, NJ, and the staff is currently working a hybrid schedule of 3 days in the office (generally Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) and 2 days (Mondays and Fridays) remote. Please note that staff may be called into the office on remote days as needed.

    Health and dental insurance, short and long-term disability, and life insurance are immediately available upon employment. ACNJ asks employees to contribute 5% of the cost for the employee’s health insurance coverage and 33% of the cost for coverage of any dependents.

    ACNJ has a 403 (b) plan, to which you may contribute immediately. After two years of employment, ACNJ contributes a 100% match of the first 3% contribution, a 50% match of the next 2% contribution and a 1% discretionary match by the board.
