Are you excited to work with youth on their writing and learn about nonprofits? Are you eager to give back to your community? This opportunity is a 10-month, full-time AmeriCorps service position (40 hours/week), through the Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium or BAYAC (a program of Bay Area Community Resources, BACR). We’re seeking to hire several AmeriCorps members to support various 826 Valencia programs starting on August 23, 2021, through June 15, 2022. 

AmeriCorps members will work closely with 826 Valencia youth, volunteers, and staff to encourage students to share what they have to say with the world, as published authors. The ideal candidates love working with youth, believe that every young person can achieve at the highest levels, and will do their best to provide necessary support. Ideal candidates can persevere through challenges in pursuit of improved outcomes for the students we serve.

826 Valencia is an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills, and helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our innovative model has inspired more than 40 like-minded organizations world-wide.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Programs Associate reports to a Programs Manager or Programs Director, depending on the specific role.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Tutor and mentor students in order to improve students’ writing skills, confidence, and pride; maintain student safety through positive behavior management
  • Provide ongoing guidance and feedback to volunteers and interns so they can meet 826 expectations and tutor effectively; escalate situations to the attention of 826 Valencia staff as needed
  • Curate and copy-edit student writing by applying style guidelines consistently and honoring student voice
  • Build relationships with volunteers so they strengthen their tutoring practice, are able to give and receive feedback from 826 Valencia, and stay engaged with the organization
  • Track student and volunteer data in Salesforce, including attendance and program hours
  • Actively participate in 826 Valencia meetings, on various teams and committees, and other work events, to develop their professional skills, gain a well-rounded experience of non-profit work, and contribute to org-wide initiatives.
  • Attend BAYAC AmeriCorps Team Days twice a month and all other required BAYAC events including Days of Service with a regional cohort of youth educators for further professional development
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 

  • High school diploma or equivalent (bachelor’s degree preferred)
  • Prior work or volunteer experience with group facilitation and youth development, and have worked directly with young people
  • Able to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols and complete the BAYAC application, a background check and tuberculosis screening. Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records
  • Case management skills and related experience (preferred)
  • Any fluency level in spoken and/or written Spanish, Chinese, Arabic (preferred)
  • Familiar with the communities that 826 Valencia serves, either as a student who has participated in 826 programs, was an English-language learner, and/or graduated from an SFUSD school, or as a resident of the Mission, Mission Bay or Tenderloin neighborhoods (preferred)

  • Strong organizational skills and are adaptable; you are able to handle multiple tasks and contribute to a variety of projects at once
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Able to work with a culturally-diverse student population and staff, and have a track record of communicating authentically and respectfully to resolve conflict, even across lines of difference
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, are team-oriented, are able to work with a variety stakeholders and audiences, and can leverage the right people and resources to achieve outcomes 
  • Able to manage your own work, ensuring high quality and timely delivery, and can adjust work accordingly to incorporate others’ perspectives
  • Openly and regularly communicates information about progress toward goals with your supervisor and team, and contributes to a culture of giving and receiving input
  • Demonstrates awareness of your own feelings, thoughts and behaviors, and their impact on others, and seek to understand your strengths and limitations

OTHER DETAILS

This full-time role (40 hours per week) is a 10-month AmeriCorps service position, through the Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium, BAYAC. Programs Associates are not 826 Valencia employees. Schedules are Monday through Friday, with some evening or weekend hours, and vary depending on the specific role. Programs Associates are based at one of three writing centers in San Francisco, with some roles spending substantial time at school sites. The centers are open-office environments where there may be substantial ambient noise and overheard conversations. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these roles may work remotely at times, from a home location in the San Francisco Bay Area with high-speed Internet access. Candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Salary

$36,000 - $36,000

Benefits

BENEFITS THROUGH BAY AREA COMMUNITY RESOURCES 

  • $1,700 monthly living allowance that does not affect eligibility for work-study, any other federal student aid, or other federal need-based programs such as food stamps, Section 8 housing, or public housing 
  • $10,000 combined education award granted upon completing a year of service (1,700 hours), to be used on college, trade school, or other educational expenses
  • Forbearance on most existing student loans, so you do not have to make any payments while in service. Once you have successfully completed the term of service, the National Service Trust will pay the interest that accrued on any student loans while you were serving
  • Health insurance and Employee Assistance Program
  • Worker’s compensation insurance
  • Subsidized childcare for eligible members

Additional Benefits from 826 Valencia

  • Additional $900 monthly stipend from 826 Valencia (budget permitting). Should the monthly living allowance from BACR increase by any amount for the 2021-2022 service year, the additional stipend from 826 Valencia will decrease by the same amount
  • Support determining eligibility and applying for public benefits such as CalFresh, Medi-Cal or a subsidized Covered CA health insurance plan
  • Reimbursement for local work-related travel expenses, such as between writing centers and school sites, and (if not working at the centers) partial reimbursement for high-speed Internet at remote work location 
  • Relocation support may be available for moving to California from another state
  • 30% discount on any purchases at the three 826 Valencia stores
  • AmeriCorps associates who wish to enroll their children in our programs may do so, as long as said participation does not displace our focal program participants
