Position Summary

The Employment Specialist will be responsible for classroom activities and individual job coaching for Workforce Development participants to improve employment readinessThe instruction will include customer service, soft skills and basic computer instruction. The Employment Specialist will network, develop, and maintain relationships with employers to identify, develop, and acquire possible employment opportunities for the participants and will collaborate with other workforce development stakeholders to develop strategies that benefit participants and stay informed with current labor market trends, recruitment practices, and labor needs.  


  •  Provides skill and employment readiness training to Project Hope participants
  • Provide instruction in employment readiness by motivating and counseling students in areas of behavior, training, personal issues and/or study habits 
  • Set and enforce ground rules around  tardiness, attire, attitude, and commitment to excellence
  • Promote the development of career success standards by modeling appropriate behaviors, mentoring students where necessary and monitoring both positive and negative behaviors through interventions 
  • Provide individualized career coaching services designed to assist clients with multiple barriers to employment, and work with employers and/or community services professionals in identifying barriers that may impede securing or maintaining employment
  • Support participants in all aspects of their job search both in group sessions and individually including assistance with employment applications, professional interviewing attire, travel to the interview, interview prep and retention
  • Maintain consistent connection with the Director of Workforce Development and Case Manager to make sure that participants  receive the necessary support for challenges they face in the curriculum
  • Perform routine data entry and document retention tasks as required by procedures 
  • Assess participants’ educational skills, interests and aptitudes; confirm that the targeted career is a realistic match for the participant
  • Assist participants in identifying employment opportunities and in establishing contact with appropriate employers to ensure the achievement of established division enrollment, graduation, and placement and retention goals
  • Complete component reports as required for grants and/or service agreements that are related to job coaching and retention services
  • Maintains up-to-date client information, case notes, and supporting documentation in case file and the Client Tracking Database to ensure all required documents are included, kept confidential, and meet standards
  • Collaborates with the Director of Workforce Development in developing and maintaining relationships with employers to assist participants in becoming hired and to support retention 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Workforce Development


  • Significant content knowledge of and experience in workforce development with a focus on culturally diverse, low income community members and/or homeless families
  • Experience teaching hard and soft skills to a wide range of adult learners preparing for employment
  • Experience with curriculum development and delivery for work- focused programs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Email applications, and Internet
  • Ability to effectively prepare and present training and communicate to a diverse audience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to encourage job seekers
  • Strong belief in and respect for the job seekers’ potential and abilities
  • Utilize model of teaching which builds on the strengths of participants
  • Ability to involve participants in their own learning process
  • Good problem solving skills and excellent follow through
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills Excellent organizational skills
  • Model appropriate employability skills for dress, language, professionalism, and work habits
  • Tenacity in helping participants to achieve their goals
  • Ability to relate to both community members and employers
  • Experience in the healthcare field or customer service a plus
  • Self-starter, resourceful, team player with the ability to manage multiple programs
