Food For Free is a non-profit organization that improves access to healthy food within our community by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste, strengthening the community food system, and creating new distribution channels to reach underserved populations.

We envision a future where everyone in our community—regardless of age, income or ability—has consistent access to fresh, healthy, delicious food.

Summary

Food For Free is hiring a full-time (or part-time) Development Coordinator. This position can be either 30 or 40 hours/week, and reports to the Development Director.

Food For Free is a small, community-based nonprofit that relies on and cherishes our donors. We try to give our donors a level of attentiveness above what they might expect of an organization our size. In the last year, the number of donations to Food For Free has tripled, making this goal both more challenging and more important.

We’re looking for someone who knows that good data supports great donor stewardship. The ideal candidate will have great database skills, solid professional writing chops, and the ability to provide great donor support.

Note: During the pandemic, we encourage staff to work from home as much as possible, but this position will require frequent—several times a week—trips to our office at 11 Inman Street to scan checks for deposit.

Responsibilities

Donations and data management:

  • Managing the donation receipting process, including:
  • o  Accurately entering contributions and other donor data into Donor Perfect
  • o  Generating and mailing or emailing donation receipts and other donor correspondence
  • o  Preparing, depositing, and reporting on bank deposits
  • Responding to donation-matching queries (online and on paper)
  • Working with Development Director to resolve questions about contributions
  • Developing a high level of knowledge of Donor Perfect’s capabilities, and using this knowledge to improve Food For Free’s development processes

Administrative Support:

  • Supporting the production of appeal letters and other correspondence, using Donor Perfect’s capabilities to generate custom mail and email lists
  • Generating accurate reports on donor giving
  • Fact-checking and proofreading grants and reports
  • Other duties as assigned

Event Support:

  • Providing on-site support for fundraising events, including the Party Under the Harvest Moon (Oct. 15, 2021), and Empty Bowls (April 2022)
  • Supporting the Event Coordinator with item solicitation, donor correspondence, data entry, and night-of-event logistics
  • Supporting the Marketing Manager by staffing tabling events

Email/Social Media/Website:

  • Writing, formatting and scheduling emails using Constant Contact
  • Managing email lists using Donor Perfect and Constant Contact
  • Writing social media content, with input from Development Director and other staff
  • Writing newsletter content
  •  Updating website content, as needed

Skills & Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years in a development office and/or similar experience managing a database and a demonstrated interest in the nonprofit sector, as well as these qualities:

  • Proficiency with Donor Perfect, or proficiency with similar software and the willingness and ability to learn Donor Perfect quickly
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word and Excel
  • Familiarity with, or the ability to learn quickly, content management systems (Wordpress) and email marketing platforms (Constant Contact)
  • Familiarity with, or the ability to learn quickly, Google Drive

  • Commitment to social justice
  • Personal honesty and integrity
  • Maturity and sound judgment
  • Ability to handle confidential information with sensitivity
  • A warm and professional demeanor, in person, on the phone, and in written communications
  • A high level of organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects
  • Attention to detail
  • Solid, professional prose

  • Ability to get to events in Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends (a few times a year)
  • Ability to work in a variety of settings, including the Food For Free office, and (occasional) loud, crowded events
